The main difference is Creole uses regular tomatoes and Cajun is more spicy tomatoes/ Rotel.

No offense, but I don't have any tomatoes in my gumbo and neither did my dad, who taught me.
1 (5-pound) stewing hen
1 pound smoked sausage
1 cup oil
1½ cups flour
2 cups diced onions
2 cups diced celery
1 cup diced bell peppers
¼ cup minced garlic
3 quarts chicken stock
24 button mushrooms
2 cups sliced green onions
1 bay leaf
sprig of thyme
1 tbsp chopped basil
salt and cracked black pepper to taste
Louisiana hot sauce to taste
½ cup chopped parsley
steamed white rice

Not even close to the truth. Cajun gumbo has no tomatoes.

Been googling, and creole v cajun gumbo isn't popping up. I think the initial poster of that divide was confused, or being sarcastic. May be an OT poster.

When do you put the peanut butter in it?

I use it in shrimp or seafood gumbo by sprinkling atop my bowl. Same with turkey gumbo sometimes. I rarely, if ever, use it in chicken and sausage gumbo.

My dad always says sprinkle the file'on your rice before you ladle in the gumbo, and it will blend easier with less stirring
That's how we do it much of the time.
Wait, mushrooms and basil? First for me.

My personal rule is use when no okra. I find it's too much when okra is involved.
I only use okra in my seafood gumbo, so I never use file in that. Chicken and sausage or Turkey/sausage gumbos always have it when I cook those. I put about 1 tbs in after the cook is complete (large pot... as others say, a little goes a long way). If I were cooking a standard pot, then maybe 1-2 tsp

If you eat a bowl of my gumbo-any kind-it has roux, file' and a can of diced tomatoes. No okra since I don't like okra.
And for people that don't agree I've not once had someone send the bowl back. But then again I don't claim to be from down da bayou.
My wife's gumbo has no roux and no file' and all of her vegetables are whirled in the food processor. Thinner than mine but I don't pass it up either.

I think my Donald link recipe out of Real Cajun calls for filé.

Pretty much. A soup served over rice with potato salad on the side. Her potato salad is mushy too. Mine is cubed potatos.
