if you get propane, you might as well cook with a stove top. You get the same results

I have a 22" Weber kettle and 22" Weber Smokey Mountain love them both. Also have some propane grill that sits next to them that barley gets used.

Char-Broil makes some great grills too

Negative. They're crap. I've got more grills and pits than Carter's got little liver pills. My cheap Brinkman gas grill at the camp has been more durable than my "commercial" Charbroil I have at home. They just don't last. I like the convince of gas and will always own one and use it on occasion. Charcoal is king though. I recently bought a new Weber Kettle to use on my back patio. Those things are hard to beat. 100 bucks and you can do all kind of stuff.

I use my gas grill every time I cook at my house. That's where I set my drink, sauces and pans.

It's nice to have the grates with the hinged sides. It allows you to throw wood chips or more coals on the fire without having to remove the grate.

The grates I plan to get remove in sections. Easy to add chips, coals, etc. I may wait on them though as the steel grates may do a decent job. I just like my cast iron.

steel grates do a great job. forget about the charcoal baskets, it's easy enough just to push the charcoal to 2 sides for indirect. got them and never used them

Yep. When I had one, I'd keep two or three bricks close to use in setting up for an offset fire.

Getting a Weber kettle and trying to max out its capabilities will not only provide great results, but will also hone your grilling/smoking skills.

I went from gas and mediocre grills to a Weber then to BGE. If I'd just gone straight to BGE, I'd have far less understanding of how to address issues, how temps are controlled and the impact it has on what I'm smoking/grilling, etc.

In short, you'll learn a lot with a Weber or another simple and quality charcoal grill, especially if you smoke and cook pizzas, etc. I don't have to implement all of the knowledge obtained now that I use the BGE, but I'm glad I have it.
