I have never felt unsafe in NYC with the exception of the subway thing... But I quickly got over it..
Just don't go around at dark in places that are not traveled.

I went to the Bronx by myself. It was pretty sweet.

What airport are you flying into?
I'm flying into Laguardia. I'm staying at the Hilton Times Square. We wanted to be in the middle of the madness so we just decided to stay there.
I would have put this on the food board but I figured I'd get some suggestions that weren't food related from this group. Thanks.

I took an express train to Harlem by mistake(which isn't a big deal it's not like a warzone) I was scared at the time.. Turns out I got to my stop faster going that way and passing up my stop turning around and coming back than taking a local train.
I got lost in NoHo and Chinatown. Two places you don't really want to spend a lot of time in.

I remember sitting in one of the subway stations (waiting for ours which was taking forever to arrive for some reason) and watching rats crawl across the tracks...Real New York

so you'll feel and be very safe in that area (which is another plus for staying in Tiem Square).
There's pretty much not a spot on Manhattan that's not extraordinarily safe these days.

I agree with staten island ferry.
Go to WTC and walk around the edge of the island in battery park to the ferry

Definitely. I was shocked to see so few uniformed officers in the subways other than in the main stations.
I believe there are quite a few undercover though, because they had a few stations we'd pass through where a plainclothes cop would be patting some guy down.
But OP, you'll be shocked at how moms take will take and pick up their small children from school on the subway, and go home that way. It's an entirely different experience.

I was on my way back from the Bronx and the train doors opened and people outside started sreaming. I though there was someone with a gun.
It was a big rat running around.

I'm not surprised they don't have weapons issues on the subways. No metal detectors or screenings or anything. Just walk right on.

They can't have them.
That would destroy the whole rapid transit thing.

Disagree. I'd rather fly into LGA any day. Much cheaper and quicker ride into the city than JFK. Never done the train thing, though. Seems like a pain in the arse with luggage.

My NYC CSB...
the group I was traveling with had just arrived to the city by train. I was supposed to be attending a Jimmy Fallon taping with some of the other peeps, but the stupid train ran late--so in a last ditch effort to get there on time I handed my stuff to the guys and attempted to make it through the subways to 30 Rockefeller on my own.
Of course I got confused and thought I was lost so I just got off at the next stop and went by the edge of Central Park, trying to get a hold of my group by phone. A large group of schoolkids walked by into the park, and behind them was an old homeless dude...he kept coming closer to me and asked "You smoke reefer? Want some??" I was so scared but just calmly said no thanks and walked away slowly, and he left to go bother some businessman

My csb is ending up in the emergency room of Mount Sinai with a broken nose and concussion. Piggy backing a girl on Columbus Avenue at 2;00am on a Tuesday is never a good idea.

Several things.
Cab fare is like 10 bucks less from LGA over JFK. F the trains. I'll pay the extra 25 bucks per couple to be dropped off at my door step with 3 bags of luggage.
There are so many food options you need to be more specific.
How high end?
What cuisines are you looking to try?
Any chefs you want to eat at their place?
Staying in midtown is always smart for first time visitors. Can be anywhere in manhattan in ~15 minutes. subway is not scary. Just look at maps and talk to concierge. They will help.
Chinatown and little Italy are neat. Do check them out. They aren't scary.
As YA said most of manhattan is very safe now.
I even felt relatively safe in Harlem.
