What are some recommendations for these categories:
- Deli/sandwich
- authentic Mexican
- steakhouse
- pizza
- barbecue
- premium cocktails

If there’s anything in general that I absolutely must try, those are welcome too. TIA

ETA don’t know which part of town quite yet, but preliminary suggestions will suffice.

Can only speak to BBQ. Regardless of what part of town you'll be in there will be great BBQ nearby.

Check out the following and others may want to expand the list:
Truth
Killens
Corkscrew
The Pit Room
Pinkerton's
Roegels
Brett's
Feges

Gypsy Poet (if any Houstonian recommends Star Pizza or Frank’s, punch them in the face).

Houston is loaded with so many great places. It’s like you name your genre and there are 10 Michelin type places that will all be equally great.

They always come up to Chicago for the Windy City Smokeout and their brisket is easily the best of all of them.

Don’t come to Houston looking for a NY/Jewish style deli…there are just so many better places. I guess if you’re dead set on it, Kenny and Ziggy’s would be what you want.

What kind of Mexican…like elevated, sit down dining or taco shops?

The BBQ recs are solid…I’ll add Loro for something different.

Cocktails…the Clarkwood

When did Houston start getting great Q? I seem to recall only a few years ago this city was lacking in Q when compared to Dallas and Austin?

No knock against them, happy they have it, as I like visiting the Houston area quite a bit.

I've only been to Killen's out of the ones mentioned, but enjoyed the hell out of it, especially the pulled pork. Brisket was good too, as was everything else on the combo plate.

Of those listed I think only Corkscrew and Roegels (Voss Rd not Katy location) are > 10 years old. Corkscrew used to be a food truck my first visit to it in 2013.

For now, Houston is the BBQ capital of the world. There are others that I haven't been to so I can't personally vouch for them like the aforementioned Blood Bros and Tejas.

Anyone ever been to Xochi in Houston?

Reservations tonight for a late Valentines Date.

I see the that they offer a dish called ‘duo of bugs’. Probably not gonna try that one.

Other than that, the menu looks delicious and I’ve heard great things about it. Any must haves?

must do - crudo, masa pancake with pork rib, & beef cheek with pasilla mole

other things i'd order - cabrito taco & cacao dessert

the masa pancake and beef cheek are standouts

Xochi is excellent.

OP should grab cocktails at anvil or julep and try some of the food suggestions above
