I noticed a lot of ill-will towards this place. I haven't been since I graduated from LSU (some 10 years ago). What's up with the place? It was never that great of food, but I did enjoy the ambiance (overpass location) and the po boys were "good enough". Did they change ownership? Food quality go down?

It was one of the 1,456 places in BR that the food board has written off

The guy that owns it is an a-hole that tried to stifle food trucks. Need to serve better than OK food to do shite like that.

I agree in the case of something like a grouchy old man stuck in his ways, like Pokey.
I don't agree in the case of Smokey from George's. His "being a dick" involved a serious attempt to shut down numerous food trucks, which BR was lucky to have in the first place. When you start touching businesses I frequent, it's an issue.

That's fine for you. Plenty of people do care though. And the hate is warranted IMO.

I was never really a fan of it before, and after the food truck debacle, I'm even less a fan of it now. On top of that, I've heard horror stories about the cleanliness in back of the house.

This.
I wouldn't refuse to go there if friends wanted to, but I'm never going to suggest it.

I worked at the Highland location in college. Cleanliness was never a problem. That was in the mid 1990's so it could be different now.
The wife and I go to the George O'Neal location every now and then. It's good for what it is.
I am curious though if you know where to get a slush puppie that you can put the flavors in on your own?

I go to George's because they have good poboys and to reminisce about the drug-fueled rage fests we used to have there when I worked in the kitchen 20 years ago.

Deceptively pricey for the quality of food.
Also no draft beer IIR.

my issue with George's (overpass) was when I walked in with a few others, asked the a-hole behind the counter: do you know if your veggie burger is vegan? He said he didn't know what that meant, I said no worries, if you still have the box they come in (which he said he did), you can just glance on the back of the box and it'll tell ya. He said, "that's stupid, I'm not going to do that" and that was the end of the conversation.
So me and my party left. Not that big of a deal but incredibly poor customer service and just a dick move imo.

Didn't Sammy work at George's before opening his own place? Or was that a rumor?

Walking into George's and asking the bartender if their veggie burger is vegan. I laughed thinking of that

I've been going since my high school days and like the neighborhood atmosphere and the food....
