The charity cook-off Hogs for the Cause has helped fan the flames of barbecue appreciation in New Orleans, creating almost 100 barbecue teams that compete at the event and pursue great ‘cue year round. Now Hogs for the Cause has also inspired a new barbecue restaurant in New Orleans. Frey Smoked Meat Co. officially opens Friday (Nov. 11). It shares its name with the Hogs for the Cause team started by the local Gruezke family. That family includes Ray Gruezke, chef/owner of the new American bistro Rue 127, just a few blocks away.

It's real Q. They have a smokestack coming out of that building.

Looks like a good bourbon selection as well based on that pic.

Frey's is legit. Competed with these guys and they should open as one of the top BBQ places in New Orleans if not the top.

I've been looking forward for this place to open. They're right down Carrolton from Blue Oak and Toup's Meatery. We've got a nice little row forming in Mid-City.

Nice addition to the 'hood and I look forward to trying it. Hoping portion sizes are okay, but meat prices look pretty standard.

I went last night and I'm here to report that the shakes are only $10.

Also they have quite the beer selection; both local and national beers are very well represented.

Got some takeout there last night. Brisket, pork ribs, cornbread, mac n cheese and brussel sprouts. All excellent. Portions were good enough. Kitchen was a bit backed up but they were nice about it and bought me an Envie while I waited.

From a recent yelp review:

The best BBQ I've had in New Orleans to date.

If you have tried blue oak and thought it was ok like I did - treat yourself to real BBQ here.

SHOTS FIRED. Not sure I can trust someone who thinks Blue Oak just ok.

I am sure Frey is good but whoever wrote that has an interest in Frey.
