I've been to both. The two main differences, at least initially for me, is the menu and ordering style.
Frey has a much larger and more creative menu. However, the table service was a bit suspect. Granted it was their first week but Blue Oak's order-at-the-counter service is much more efficient when it comes to fresh BBQ.

Tried it tonight. They were out of brisket, pork belly, beef ribs, and a few other things.
Tried the wings. Wings nice size and good, but not enough smoke flavor and sauce can't touch blue oak's house made inferno sauce.

My story about Frey Meats:
Frey was a major player in the New Orleans meat industry in the 60's and 70's. Ham, luncheon meat, salami, all that stuff.
In middle school, our history teacher gave us an assignment to write a story about our family's experience during the Great Depression. My story was about how my teenage dad made a dollar a day delivering for a drugstore.
To my surprise, my classmate, who was a member of the Frey family, said that that's when her family made their fortune. They had money, almost nobody else did, so they bought up as much property in New Orleans as they could.
I wound up sitting next to her at Super Bowl VI in Tulane Stadium. She was pretty nice, but I always thought her story was kind of interesting.
I heard that the guy opening it was the grandson of a member of the family.
