Most delivery places charge that fee just because other places started doing it. The driver doesn't get any of it.

Again, it's up to the establishment. How is the OP, or any customer for that matter, supposed to know how the restaurant divides the delivery charge and any tip that is added to that charge?

That's up to the customer? The guy paid 20% on top of the delivery charge. So if the restaurant management keeps that for themselves and doesn't give any to the delivery driver, that's on them, not the customer. If that is the case, then let the customer know beforehand, and I've seen it on the delivery menu at some places. Doesn't sound like that was the case here though.

The OP ordered food, paid for it, paid 20% on top of the delivery charge. If he were to tip another 15-20% for the standard good service tip, combined with the 20% he had already added to the delivery charge, that would be a bit much. He did what he should've done in my opinion.

Maybe not in the typical way but I think it's more of a lesson learned.

You're a fricking douche bag. I worked deliveries like this. How fricking dumb do you have to be be not not realize the delivery fee isn't the tip. It was say "tip". Don't order food if you can't afford to tip the guy.

Total bullshite that a $4 "delivery fee" isn't a tip. That's ridiculous.

I refuse to pay a "delivery fee" and then a tip on top of that. WTF is the delivery fee for? It's just another way of the restaurant charging more without actually charging more. It isn't costing the company a damn thing to delivery me my food. The company / restaurant is screwing the driver out of his tip, not me.

I wouldn't order food without having cash on hand to tip the driver, regardless of the delivery charge. If somebody's out at night, putting himself on the road, in his vehicle, literally putting his life at risk so I can order in, I'm paying him. Well. Period.

Maybe if the fee was $1, but 20%? For a delivery charge? No way.

On principal, i wouldn't order from them though, so it wouldn't matter

Phoning out is a lot of time. You lose. What the hell is "phoning out" and how is it a lot of time?

Sorry, I thought you 'phoned out.' But again...I've never seen a person do it in a grocery store.

I am sure you think that is clever. I take my phone out of my pocket and use my fingerprint to initiate payment prior to my items being scanned, just like you pull out your wallet/change purse and start removing bills/coins only faster. Is that better? Say whatever nonsense you want, but NFC payment is faster than cash.

Anecdotally you have never seen someone pay with their phone, but I have never seen someone have exact change ready as soon as the items are scanned. You still have to wait for the total and then get the correct change. I suffered behind some guy counting out his exact change yesterday. Then you also must wait for the clerk to deposit the change into the register.

You have to wait for the person to get the correct amount out for payment. Then, the cashier has to ring it up, count it and get change if any. Then, the receipt.

That would be better than stiffing a driver.

I have never seen anyone pay with their phone at the grocery store... Albertertson. I have seen people try to pay with their phone at Starbucks. They always have a problem...it takes a long time until they figure out how to use it.
But I don't use cash at SB. They swipe my card.
