So I'm going on a first date this coming Thursday in NOLA. Needs recs on St. Charles, Magazine, CBD etc. Something mid range in formality. Steaks, Italian or good seafood.

Also atmosphere is obviously important. TIA

Pearls of Wisdom

First of all Foj1981, you never let on how much you like a girl. "Oh, Debbie. Hi."
Two, you always call the shots. "Kiss me. You won't regret it."
Now three, act like wherever you are, that's the place to be. "Isn't this great?"
Four, when ordering food, you find out what she wants, then order for the both of you. It's a classy move. "Now, the lady will have the linguini and white clam sauce, and a Coke with no ice."
And five, now this is the most important, Foj. When it comes down to making out, whenever possible, put on side one of Led Zeppelin IV.

and most importantly, don't leave your wallet at home

I'll go with Venezia and dessert at Brocato's. Casual enough but it has that vibe that makes everything more relaxed.

Steaks and Italian are absolutely terrible ideas for a first date. Heavy food. The girl will be stuffed and want to go to bed. Alone.

Best to keep it fun and light. Small plates. Cocktails. Wine.

If you MUST do Steaks, you could do Mr Johns, which does great steaks and decent Italian.

Personally, for Italian I would do Mariza.

First date I would do Coquette, Sylvain, Bouligny Tavern, or Bacchanal, depending on what I was going for.

These are terrible tips for a first date, all of them above. They are almost all nouveau and try to force the dining "Experience" on its patrons. It will make you look desperate and you are trying too hard.

So keep it nice but casual.

Le Crepe Nanou
Lola's
Cafe Degas
Three Muses
Crescent City Brewhouse (yeah, there, I said it, great first date place, no pressure and relaxed)
Cafe Atchafalaya
Mondo
LMNO (hit or miss)
Purloo (went last week and much better meal than we've had before)

Italian: Vincents on St. Charles
Steak: LaBoca if wanting something different than classical steak house
Seafood: Peche

If going for something different than steak/italian I'd second Cafe Atchafalaya, LPG, Coquette, and Lolas (esplanade). And I'd add Boucherie (river bend though).
