Ever think where your food comes from-specifically?

I'm munching on some raspberries.

The package says Hecho en Mexico.

So I picture a real person picking these berries. Then I wonder about who he/she is and what they might be doing at this very minute.

Sometimes I just ponder bout such thangs.

Yes, and I care much more about that than organic vs non organic or whatever other marketing crap people come up with

I buy most of my meat, eggs, veggies from local farmers, either at the farmers market, or through ordering through their FB pages

all the other meat in my freezer came directly from the woods or lakes of LA

I pay quite a bit of attention to it. I try to buy produce as locally as possible, as well as eggs, honey, and beef. Half of a shorthorn steer will fill up my freezer next week. I also try not to buy ridiculously out of season produce flown in from another hemisphere (like asparagus in Nov/Dec/Jan, or citrus in July)

But if you are specifically interested in the conditions experienced by people who are handpicking, sorting, etc your produce, you might want to read The American Way of Eating, by Tracie McMillan. She works at an Applebees, at WalMart, and finally, as a farm worker in the CA Central Valley. Interesting stuff.

My post was intended to be a bit more whimsical, but your methods are admirable.

There are rumors that there are fish in the waters around Savannah, but I can't catch nuthin.

Hunting isn't my thing.

Although I have been harvesting asparagus all winter from my garden in Dallas. And there are huge greenhouses in south Texas, Cali and Mexico using computer controlled hydroponic and vertical growing methods to produce all sorts of stuff "out of season".

I think about legless frogs rolling around in little wheelchairs.

Mostly from Whole Foods but I do go to Rouse's and eat off of trucks quite a bite.

I spend my time pondering more serious stuff. Like will I get aids from this toilet seat.

I bet he's not washing his hands after coming out of the port o can on the side of the raspberry field this very minute.

And as above I don't worry about organic or not. I just try to buy as much local as I can both vegetables and protein. We grow a garden and can, we have bee hives with honey, close buy yard chickens and eggs, grass fed beef by our farm. We still buy plenty at the stores but just try to get those items fresh and as close to home as possible. Not always but we do make an effort. I'm a label reader from way back.

Port o cans? Must be some swanky raspberry fields. Try a hole down at the end of the field, right near the irrigation canal. E Coli from uncooked, field grown items (ie, close to the ground, not on a tree) like lettuce, green onions, cabbage, carrots, etc is one of the biggest sources of food poisoning.

I'm gonna track an avacado down one day and find out where it came from and shake the hand of who picked it. Make a vacation out of it. Go find the farm on the Yucatan peninsula or some such then cruise down to Puerto Vallarta for a couple days. I just hope Manuel is still there by the time I got there and not somewhere in Utah building scaffold. Hard to beat a good avacado

Can I go with you? I'll bring a lot of Charter. I love avocados. I don't really want to see where the workers pee, though. I wash them well before I use them anyway.

Gris, they grow on trees. Surely Manuel is not peeing up in the trees. You bring the Charter and will go find out though. I'll bring the ether.

Well, you never know. You boys like to do all sorts of strange pee spraying antics.

Okay, so uh what's the ether for? I'm sort of askeered.
