I don't have cable so didn't see the show. So they poured a pint of regular beer, then poured the last dregs of a sour into the pint and drank it? This post was edited on 8/20 at 10:23 pm

And then they poured all the beer back into the bayou after they yelled cut.

IMO the show came out better than I expected.

Having been there, and Wise can vouch for this, it felt like pretty shitty TV while it was filming. At least that was my view. Regardless, boring is not a word I'd use for him

Agree, and yes Derek is an uber beer nerd but I wouldn't say he's boring. Very interesting cat.

No, they added the dregs from another sour beer when they pitched the yeast.

Oh, well that's common practice then. I thought they showed something I was missing out on. Bummer.

Fwiw, Rouge and I met a guy that is pitching a beer show to a couple channels (he did a pilot at Deschutes) and unfortunately they have to put in a lot of the fluff and scripted bullshite.

I'm sure most of us would rather them just go record legit conversations with bar owners, patrons, and breweries, but unfortunately that's not what appeals to a broader audience.
Without that scripted awkwardness, the cable execs won't let it sniff the air. They say it's too "beer nerdy".

ETA - Brew Dogs does get away with a lot more of the beer nerd talk because they compensate with the "crazy" brewing methods that appease simpletons.

Really? I'll agree he isn't as energetic as Dylan, but I wouldn't say boring. I've found every conversation with him to be riveting. But I'm also a meganerd. You can talk about yeast strains and I'm pulling out my legal pad and jotting notes. I guess they could have used one of the more "marketable" personalities involved in the brew process. I bet Indy would have done well. I dunno. I really like Derek so I can't be objective.

ETA oops saw your edit

No doubt. Everyone can't be a maven.

I'm surprised none of the well connected beer crew from TD were at the show's beer tasting.

Oh we were

No. When they were pitching the yeast, they poured the last dregs of a sour with the yeast. Then let it ferment.

Well i'm slowly beginning to appreciate sours. There have been 1 or 2 i like. I don't like a tremendous amount of souring. I like small amounts that lend a tiny bit of tartness without taking away from the beer. Basically i like a mildly soured farmhouse saison. If i ever decide to brew one, i'll do this trick with one of the few sours i like.

FWIW, the ones i've enjoyed has been Mikkeller Funky "E" and New Belgium Le Terroir (2013), and loved the small hint of sourness in Jester King Noble King. I think they may have changed up the recipe for Noble King. I don't remember enjoying it last year as much as i did last weekend.

JK makes pretty funky beers. I dunno about the recipe, but it could just be a shift in your palate.

The beer was terrible IMO. There is a reason why that style is dead.

This might be a topic for the homebrew thread, but if you want to control your sourness level, a good way is sour mashing. It's a one trick pony, but it adds lactic sourness.

Just watched the Northern California episode of brew dogs. Such a great episode. Starts to make me think, in comparison, the New Orleans episode might be one of the worst.

Good for snake n jakes. They were at my bar in this episode. They put on the tv personality but off camera are just really down to earth cool. (Wont tell where I manage)
