Well forget I said anything.

I figured there'd be some way they could take the additional revenue from the difference in price and distribute it to the service workers. But I suppose you're right, that would have to be tracked and recorded for the IRS and blah blah blah, IF it were even legal.

I'm really glad I don't own a restaurant. Food is fun, but managing it on that level doesn't seem like it would be.

ETA: Which restaurants in the FQ were actually closed?

Bayona closed starting July 4 for staff vacations and renovations. They open back up Thursday.

kind of reminds me of when the Boot would put up signs saying "Fiesta Privada" to keep out all the Mexicans and Hondurans who came up to work after Katrina

This is true. It has been mandated that we can no longer charge automatic gratuity anymore. Pretty sure what Ernst did was in fact illegal. Good for them though.

Also, if your restaurant was anywhere near Bourbon this weekend, you were SLAMMED. People saying that the restaurants were not busy are just wrong. Deanies had the longest line I've ever seen them have. It was backed up all the way to the Alibi at times. Crazy crowded.

Domenica was also closed this weekend.

Peche was also closed on July 4th, I believe. I think they opened on Saturday, though.

I think the law was passed and then didn't last long and was taken back. I THINK.

Our restaurant still operates under the pretense that we are still unable to add any automatic or forced gratuity unless it is for a private party when a contract is signed.

FQ was packed this weekend. As someone with a bird's eye view of the busiest part of Decatur I can attest to non essence tourists being present, as were plenty of cops. Cops all left about 7pm though (seriously), cause all the bad stuff happens in the afternoon. Sorry, I'm bitter.

Haha good for them. Ive been in there during Essence Fest and while the fest does attract plenty people with money, it also attracts a lot of trash that you dont want in your business. Having money also doesnt take away from the fact that, as a whole, black people dont tip for shite and they are usually less than stellar customers at a place like Ernst Cafe.

I've got a little side job in the FQ a few nights a week that I do mainly for fun... and usually, the tips equal or exceed my rate of pay. But not this weekend. I'm glad I went out of town through Sunday. I worked Monday and had a few Essence stragglers... next year, I know not to come back before Tuesday. I do everything in my "normal" life to break down stereotypes and bigoted beliefs, but the proof is in the pudding. F 'em. Cheap bastards. Good on Ernst Café.

Its not a stereotype. They know it, we know it, everyone knows it. Its so widely known and accepted that no one expects the tips so they are basically given a free pass.

Oh well
