Actually you are wrong. LPG was open on July 4th (mainly because everyone else was closed), open on Saturday and Sunday. They were closed Monday and Tuesday.
ETA: Which restaurants in the FQ were actually closed?

I'm sure if they did close it was only to let the staff go see Lionel. Which was a great show by the way.

apparently so if none of the restaurants were busy this weekend despite hotels being at close to 100% occupancy…I can see big groups of people all in 1 hotel room with 3 ice chests full of white bread, mayo, ham, and bags of chips.

Just for accuracy, Essence visitors as a group are not the same as Bayou Classic. Essence does attract people with money.
I do sort of understand Ernst's position though. The sign could have been a little more subtle however, IMO.
Ernst's food is pretty damned mediocre.

I have no clue, you and fun bunch were the ones who mentioned places being closed.
My only point was if you are a business in the FQ and you close down during Essence Fest weekend, it's not a coincidence.

This is a fair point too, but why were no restaurants busy this weekend (if that's the case I'm just regurgiating info posted in this thread) with a FQ full of tourists?

And I am saying that I am not aware of any businesses in the French Quarter (bars and restaurants) that closed for July 4th weekend. But I am saying a lot of restaurants do close for July 4th weekend, both in New Orleans and elsewhere, because it is a horrible time for business and to give their staff time off.
But every year someone wants to claim places are closed for July 4th because of Essence crowd. Which isnt the case.
Again the tipping thing is more suspect. But I have no idea what Ernst does for say the Sugar Bowl, so not sure if it is a different policy. As an aside, I wish we could get rid of tipping in all service industries.

Exactly. You want a tip provide better services. Don't be mad because you working during Lionel's show.

La Pavillon once told my dad that during the Bayou Classic, some of the guests actually tried b'que in the bathtubs
I've heard this one, but it was the Hilton Riverside.

I heard you could shoot a canon through the Dome and not hit anyone by the end of the show....
As BO stated, Essence's schedule doesn't leave much open time for dining.

Absolutely. But not in the FQ. in the FQ it would be silly to close when hotel occupancy is near 100%, right?? But there are still 2 factors to determine:
a.) are businesses really NOT busy despite full hotel occupancy rate and
b.) does business correlate with hotel occupancy?
If business does not correlate with hotel occupancy, then they simply shut down because it's slow. If business does correlate with hotel occupancy, they shut down because it's Essence Fest.
Again, this is all hypothetical, as I have seen no legitimate reports of places being closed in the FQ, and as previously mentioned, I would not expect any fine dining Uptown restaurants to be affected by Essence Fest guests so if they shut down it certainly is not due to that.

That's cuz everyone was dancing on the ceiling
It's tough to follow Charlie Wilson on a Sunday night

Galatoires also closes from Saturday before Mardi Gras until Ash Wednesday. Arguably, that decision costs them a lot of money, but one that they probably make because of non economic reasons.

i worked as a door man in baton rouge for 10yrs. I spent a couple of years at various clubs here in town. black people are horrible tippers. i worked at one club and the black promoters would beg to come in and have a special night. the only reason they said yes is because it was a tuesday night and the club took half the door. the other doorman that the promoter had work with me had a special thug fee..normal cover was $25 but if the guy came all thuged out the door guy charged him $50 and we split the money at the end of the night.

If festival tipping is such a problem they should just put a sign that indicates they are using a special festival menu, then tack a few extra bucks on each dish. Service people then know they are getting their due without having to worry about the whims of the public. It's easy to justify, especially if you do that with all the festivals. Can't be construed as racist then.

That's actually a really great idea.

the business owners would reap the benefits, but what about the workers? they still arent getting tips.
Posted on 7/8/14 at 2:52 pm to Matisyeezy
Fairly certain that would violate wage laws. Tips, tip pooling, tip sharing, and other issues have caused major headaches and law suits in the last few years.
Again just abolish tipping.

I don't get the applause of this notice. I can see how black people can take this as being racist and not visit the bar/restaurant. So who is paying the 20% gratuity? So the sign that's set up get a 20% gratuity from black people is being paid by every other race because black people won't go in there. Smart
