Headed to Athens in a couple weeks for LSU v. UGA baseball game. Game is at 2:00pm Saturday so looking for a place to eat lunch and a place for dinner. Any price point or style of food is cool by me.

Also any recommendations on a hotel that's in a good area where I can walk to some bars that night?

For hotel I would stay at the FoundryPark Inn. For food, go to 5 and 10 for dinner and maybe Weaver D's for lunch. Athens is not really known for its food.

Ro, I've been to several baseball series up there. You will really enjoy the downtown area that is just across the street from Campus. There is a tavern called The Globe that has a great vibe and good food and beer. As far as hotels, stay in the downtown area. There is a Hilton Garden Inn and a Hotel Indigo that I know are close.

Was just there over the weekend ..... The Royal Pheasant is a great place for lunch and a pint. Branded Butcher is good as well. The Indigo was serviceable.

Catch a show at the 40 Watt (Foxygen is playing Saturday of the series) or Ga Theater

The World Famous, Caledonia are good dives.

If I was going to try 2 places I'd go to Trapeze for lunch and Last Resort for dinner.

+1.

Ro I usually stay at the Courtyard Marriott which is walking distance to downtown and like a minute away from Creature Comforts which I also recommend doing. Trapeze is your best bet for beer.

The Hilton garden inn is the other hotel I have stayed at and while nicer, I generally don't think it's worth the extra money compared to the CY Marriott.

Athens brewery Sweetwater has their 420 Fest that weekend. But it's in Atlanta proper.

Thanks to all the input ladies and gents I'll report back where I end up .

I lived there for 3 years and I can say there's some interesting advice in this thread.

Hotels I don't have much input on. I've visited someone at the Foundry once and the rooms were extremely small. It's also a bit of a walk.

The Hilton is fine. Parents stayed there for graduation.

The Indigo had nice rooms and has a very modern asian fusion vibe but that's also a walk and I think it's the more expensive hotel.

For food

5&10 is not worth it. Didn't really care for it and only went once. If I'm going to spend serious money, there are better places.

When I'm in Athens, my list goes

Last Resort-most popular restaurant in athens for all intents and purposes. Probably not the best but that's the #1 place for me.

Ettienne- If you want to spend money, go here. I've eaten here a few times. Wrote a review for it. The dinner was one of the better meals ever. The quality for the lunch and breakfast has been lacking though.

Transmetropolitain- Italian joint. Pizza and pasta. Best location on this list. Very casual.

Little Italy- drunk pizza. I lived across from here and I use to eat here 3 times a week. Gets rambunctious late at night but if you're looking for greasy food, can't go wrong here. Their meatball subs are AMAZING.

Since you will be in the area of the baseball stadium, I'll add Cali and Titos. Very popular BYOB tex-mex. Wasn't adding ethnic but the location here is like a 5 minute walk.

As for what others suggested:

The Globe- fun but very hipster. They have irish folk music every sunday afternoon. One of the best beer selections around. Food is there.

Royal Pheasent and Branded Butcher- never been. Must have opened after I left

Georgia Theater is >>>>>>>>>> 40 Watt and I really like the rooftop bar on the Georgia Theater. Really chill and they have food.

frick trapeze. I spoke with the owner once and he completely fricked me over. Prick.

Sweetwater opened up after I left and I haven't been but Terripain is pretty close to athens.

The globe and trapeeze for beer. No other place compares. Both are somewhat hipsterish but who cares.

There's a new brewery that is less than a year old making great beer. Visit Creature Comforts website for details on tours & events. I've only tired two if their offerings; Athena & Tropicalia. Both are excellent. Athens is a great place to waste time.

Gator tails at Roadhouse and Nowhere Bar

GA Theater and 40 Watt are both legendary

Weaver D's for lunch

HAHAHAHAHA

Wow.

Don't listen to THIS guy.

He was right on 5&10, though - that's going to be a longer, more pricy meal. Go with dishes that are in season. If it's more than just a few of you get several different apps, etc, so you can taste different things. You can have a similar experience at the National. If going on Sat night get a reservation.

Last Resort is good -- lunch and dinner menus are different. Follow it up with some cake or cheesecake.

I agree on the suggestion of Transmetropolitan. The "New Orleans" restaurant (Nona I think...may not even be open anymore) isn't really worth it. Chops N Hops in Watkinsville (10 min away from downtown) has good burgers.

Also if you have time you could check out the Terrapin brewery. For good beer selections go to the Globe and/or Trappeze. I liked Walkers a lot - decent bar food and a good selection of liquors.

I agree on NONA. It's ok but a LA person would be disappointed.

Royal Pheasant is a good fish and chips, pint, sit at the bar and watch footie place.

I stand by Trapeze and Last Resort as recs for R2R though having interacted with him here for a long time

I liked Globe as well. I forgot about East West Bistro. Good choice.

And grab a cup of coffee at Jittery Joes. They do cool "pairings" with Terrapin.

Don't care as much for Copper Creek

My personal list is:

East West (only been once since ownership change, though)
Last Resort
Transmet is ok, but I like Amici. Most will disagree.
Copper Creek is good
The National

I'd also go to Keba but that's not a recommendation.

My thought too...guy throws out Weaver D's as a suggestion and then that? Must have eaten exactly two meals in Athens.
