How do you handle it? One of my good friends always invites me over to eat... I always go, because he and his wife are real cool, but the issue is the food he makes is crap and he thinks it's awesome and fawns over it. I choke it down and play nice, but its always some godawful deer stew or some such with the whole fricking spice cabinet thrown in.
I don't say anything, because he'd be offended but damn... I may have to start telling him I already ate.

Start bringing your own dishes to the events and teach his palate about good and evil.

Good idea. I have cooked for him ( and I know it's good, LOL) but it hasn't seemed to rub off yet.

You think he starts this same thread on a different board?

Since I love to cook when he invites me I usually offer to come over and help him cook. He usually lets me take over but he has also improved so either way it seems to be working. At least he no longer cooks pork chops on the pit for 45+ minutes.

I think this is very, very common. In fact, it probably applies to a bunch of people on this board.

I had a girlfriend for a while years ago that was a terrible cook. Her kids grew up eating it, so they would dig in. I would eat very little at her house.

She would make boxed shells and cheese, without even draining the pasta completly. It would be all watery and runny and nasty! She also, almost never, seasoned anything.

45 minutes for a chop would be as satisfying as eating a shoe sole.

My SIL is so challenged it isn't funny. Take out from Taco Bell would be better by leaps and bounds.

You don't have to crush his soul, teaching and training him is the right thing to be done.

You left out the pallet of Tony's they must buy once a month.

Yes, great friends, but they cook like a bunch of drunks in a deer camp. Everything contains the aforementioned, and if it can be fried or smoked, it will be.

you're probably right. This is my biggest fear. I love cooking for friends and inviting them over, but I'm scared of screwing it up.

If they're good friends and you eat there regularly, then I would feel comfortable offering some advice. Don't tell him it tastes like shite, but guide him in the right direction and everybody wins.

If all else fails then get a little drunk before dinner. Alcohol makes everything taste better.

My ex used to think she was a fricking Michelin star candidate for home cooking. She made one thing I ever remember liking, everything else was pretty bad. She always thought it was awesome because she somehow used 32 ingredients in every dish. Her friends and I would always cringe when she got it in her head she wanted to cook.

I have a friend that is a good cook. But she always wants to try something new. Example she makes good old fashion potato salad, but now she puts fresh dill and some other herb in it. taste like crap.
