Andy's Grocery on 621 less than 1/2 mile from Airline near the railroad track @ KC Road.

Good plate lunches.

Severely overrated. It's lesser quality than Mi Padres, Casa Maria, and Las Palmas (which should never be your standards when it comes to measuring good Tex-Mex cuisine).

Wut?

El Meskal is nothing like those garbage Tex-Mex places you mentioned. However it is a hole in the wall type of place that serves more authentic style Mexican food. Maybe you don't know the difference.

Not only no, but hell no.

Why does everyone obsess over that place's bland chicken? Just because it's locally-owned doesn't mean you have to support it

No one has mentioned my favorite, John Michael's Good Eats on 73,it's in a strip mall between I-10 and Dutchtown HS. Excellent sandwiches.

Authentic my arse. Go to La Tiendita or La Reyna in Baton Rouge (Central American but still authentic) for the real stuff.

But whether you call it authentic or not, that doesn't change the fact that it's still not all that good.

I'm dead serious. Please tell me what makes Leader's any better than most diners, restaurants, or country buffets around.

That's my point, to an extent.

It's not like the only patrons there are people passing through to do some shopping. People in Ascension are very fond of their chain restaurants and therefore the local dining suffered as a result of the inability to invest in high-quality establishments.

Y'all can laugh all you want, but that doesn't change the fact that I spent the majority of my life growing up in Ascension Parish.

I don't dog on the area because it's the cool thing to do. I'm just being honest about my opinion regarding local restaurants that everyone swears are so great.

Nah local dining is doing just fine....
places like Kevins, Swamp Pop, Dempsey's, Sammy's, Tommy's Fish House, Nooley's, Griffin Grill, Burger Delight, Starlight Cafe, etc etc etc.... are all still considered mom and pop type restaurants that are just fine.

Will you find a 4* type establishment, no as the closest thing you would have would be a Mike Anderson's on 30 but that is it since Sno's has gone downhill (imo)

But Gonzales/Prairieville area has a ton of local joints that offer great food for the price, a ton of gas stations and grocery stores offer meals that are on par with many restaurants.

When I mentioned "fine dining" I wasn't necessarily referring to expensive or refined dining. I just meant quality cuisine. While there might be a number of locally-owned establishments, I just have never cared for the majority of them.

Sometimes, I feel as though people enjoy them sheerly for the convenience and "homemade" feel.

Now there was a restaurant in Duplesis off of Airline near the Nissan dealership that I thoroughly enjoyed when I was younger. It was a bistro in a unsightly pink building that didn't serve alcohol but offered a variety of tasty food.

I agree with you 100%. While the restaurant's decor and environment has certainly improved, the food quality has steadily declined in the last few years.

That is a personal preference, that mentions nothing of the actual quality.... I am not a fan of Kevin's but many people are so I wouldn't tell someone to avoid it since we all have different taste palates.
Kevins is still considered an uppertier establishment in the area and while it may not be convenient for someone who lives closer to Prairieville Wal-Mart (neither would be many of the places listed) it would still be a great/close place for many.
The "homemade" feel is very important for many because when you go out with your family you want it to taste/feel like a home made meal, no way would I ask kids to go to some restaurants I visit because they would not enjoy the food and nothing caters to those people.

I really enjoy Nooleys Wings. Couple other decent menu items. They fail on the curley cues though.

Snos still does fried seafood pretty well.

I like how this was a nice little thread with good advice, and then it had to get ruined by some a-hole.

Keep it on track folks, any other good suggestions?

Tee-Wayne's Cajun Cooking on 621 between Airline and 73, daily lunch specials are usually very good.

Crossroads on 621 behind the Chevron on Hwy 44... Food is excellent service is not.

Starlight Cafe on Burnside, probably my favorite place to get a sandwich.

Carlico on Hwy 44/Airline has great breakfast never been for lunch

Mission Street Cafe on Hwy 73

Philays for poboys on Airline across from the old original Burger Delight

Griffin Grill on Hwy 73 is as close to Burger Delight as you'll find, same family.

Burger Delight on Hwy 42, took the name but the burger doesn't hold up to original.

Dempsey's took over where Rocco's was on Airline in Prairieville by the Walmart... Pretty much like a BrewBachers and pretty mediocre from what I got.

Kamal's on Hwy 74 and Airline is the best Greek/Lebanese restaurant in the area.

Coffee House is kind of out of the area on Hwy 22 and Hwy 70, and kinda "touristy" but a good place for beignets

Don't be scared by the sketchy store but Geismar Grocery has probably the best burgers. They are awesome. They are down 73 towards HWY 30.

my wife and I call it Geismar Ghetto Grocery. Yes, great hamburgers, and great breakfast too.
