Back when I was younger my dad would take me and my brother down to Manchac to pick Dewberries around my birthday. We would then bring them to my grandma who would make Dewberry and Dumplings.

Well I decided yesterday after striking out fishing in Grand Isle to hit some spots and I came out with a few quarts worth of Dewberries.

Unfortunately my grandma is 90 and suffering from slight dementia or Alzheimer's and she was unable to remember her recipe. So this is a lesson for everyone that has older parent or grandparents: If you like something they make, make sure you get it in writing before it is too late.
Without a recipe I went to the internet for some help and found this RECIPE which appeared to match what my grandma would make. Without further ado, here is how my attempt at it turned out. Sorry for the huge pictures

Dewberry Dumplings
Dumpling wet
1 egg well beaten
1/2 cup whole milk
1tsp Vanilla
1/2 cup Sugar
2tbsp Melted butter
Dumpling Dry
1 3/4 cup AP Flour
1.5tsp Baking Powder
Dewberry Sauce
2 Quarts Dewberries
3 cups Sugar

Instructions
1. Combine dry ingredients and whisk together

2. Combine wet ingredients and whisk together
3. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and set aside

4. Put berries into large skillet or stock pot, I used stock pot, add sugar

5. Cook the berries on medium heat and bring it to a soft boil, stirring frequently. This is what mine looked like halfway through.
6. Once sauce makes it to a boil, use a teaspoon to scoop and drop the batter gently into the sauce. (The batter will expand in size)
7. I put all my 1 tsp batter balls into the pot then covered it for 3 minutes, then kinda stirred/flipped the dumplings over and covered it again for 3 minutes.
8. Stick a fork into the largest dumpling and if it comes out clean it is done. Remove from heat.

9. Serve with ice cream and enjoy

The only things I'd add is a few strips of lemon peel in the berry sauce, and a pinch of cinnamon and a few scrapings of nutmeg in the dumpling batter.

If you ever have huge pics again just type in width=500 after the jpg/png/gif

Like this...[imj]https://i.imgur.com/ViYV108.jpg width=500[imj]...And your pics will come out this size.

I thought it was a bit early for dewberries. My wife's grandmother passed away this year but they had filmed her for the last couple of years making all of her recipes. Blackberry cobbler was one and we would pick buckets of them with her almost 90 out in that heat picking too. Great stuff. Yours looks very good.

Here is to your grandmother. And mine at 90 saw little green men and wanted to dance in her negligee with them. God bless little old ladies and at that age a bit of dementia isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Looks great!

My wife's made two dewberry dump cakes this year, so I'll show her this recipe to change things up.

Dewberries are actually different from blackberries. About the easiest way to tell is that dewberries come in season earlier than blackberries. There are other ways to tell, but if you're picking them now, they are dewberries. In another couple months, blackberries.

They are similar in appearance, but dewberries are ripe now and blackberries are ready later in the summer. Dewberry stems also have fine red hairs on the stems along with the thorns, while blackberry stems are smooth with thorns.

That would look much tastier if it were a dewberry cobbler.

I'm a fan of cobblers, in fact I get my mom to make me a cobbler for my birthday instead of a cake. Give the dumplings a shot, they are great

Nice. Dew berries around here are still red from what I've seen.

I was going to make a similar post but didn't get around to it. I made my first run around the neighborhood and picked a couple weeks ago, then made a second run this week. First run I had twice as many, but all together I picked over 6 lbs. The first day I made a couple cobblers with fresh berries - one for me and one for my dad (both diabetics ). Should have taken a pic of the cobblers - but I've ever made! The rest of the berries are in the freezer - after rinsing, soaking, and drying, I spread them out on a large baking tray and freeze them individually, then bag them for the freezer. Have enough for another 3-4 cobblers.

I went back yesterday and got 1.5 gallons of berries. I am planning on making dumplings again and a cobbler. If anyone has a good cobbler recipe please post it.
