Did you see that galley sink?

Thoughts on that.

We put in a really big and deep Blanco granite composite sink and really like how it handles all sizes of pots. They come in all shapes and colors.

But be warned that the depth can make it a bit of a backbender to lean down into it to wash dishes. I got used to it, and we put in a wire rack on the bottom of the big side that raised the work area up an inch or two.

window above the sink if possible

Our new house has those bottom crank windows in front of sink and a porch on the other side. Ive always wanted windows with the cranks

What are some things you would want in a kitchen?

We have a narrow tall cabinet next to our range. I am looking for one of those dual rack thingies to put spices on that will slide out.

That's a MUST have. Our current spice situation is a train wreck.

Eta great and timely thread! I'll post pics as our kitchen comes to life.

PS are French door fridges out now? Should I be looking for a regular side by side instead? I hate following trends that suck... Like front loader washers.

Please do not store spices/seasonings in a warm place (like next to the range). They'll all be rancid and/or tasteless in no time flat. Store in a cool, dark place away from the stove, refrig exhaust, oven, etc.

Agree about the front-load washers 100%.

Yeah, you see stove-side spice cabinets all over the place. Kitchen designers love 'em. It's still a bad idea if you like spices that actually taste good. Consider drawer storage--you can easily find glass or metal containers to fit in a drawer and label the tops. Works great for me.

I'm putting in that 650 cfm broan 64000 hood and a dacor gas cooktop with a 18k btu burner so I would hate for the heat to ruin them.

The big burner is in the middle if that matters and I think with all burners going it's like 54k btu

I'm gonna try out a velcro spice system similar to Alton Brown soon.

It seems me that on the back of cupboard doors would be a great place for spices.

i like that idea. maybe all my sweet stuff (cinnamon, sugar, vanilla extract, nutmeg, etc.) on the back of the left cabinet door, and the spicey spices velcroed inside the right cabinet door.

If you don't like bad smells from the trash compactor, I must tell you to

NEVER

try to dispose of a body in the dang thing without immediately changing out the bag.

Trust me. For body disposal, little chunks pushed down a BIG Insinkerator is the way to go.

It will be along night regardless, but what's a guy/girl to do?

Not a fan of the garbage disposal. Anything you can put down the disposal should be going into the backyard compost heap....which can accomodate things that can't go down the disposal (like some paper goods).

Next to the appliances is probably not the best place for the spices, but that's where mine are. Well, I have 3 spice cabinets in various areas. However, the one next to the double ovens doesn't get hot and I've never had an issue with my spices going bad. Must have good insulation there and my cabinet wood is pretty thick.

I've never used a galley sink. I like my deep double stainless sinks. They may not be the prettiest you've ever seen, but they function great for my type of cooking and kitchen movements. I really hate those tiny side sinks with the disposal in them.

I have a strong disposal, as well. It's worth it. It eats everything.

Make sure you have a good "triangle" - meaning that it's easy to get go between your fridge, stove, and sink. At my parents house, the island is between the fridge and the sink. That may not sound like a big deal, but when doing heavy duty cooking, it's a pain in the butt to migrate around the island every time you need something.

Also, make sure your dishwasher is right next to your sink.

I don't know about a triangle but the space between the three is pretty open at our new place.

We are going full mid century style. Amazing how much of the original furniture is still out there on craigslist for dirt cheap.

Something kinda like this
