Upright is much better for ease of use and access. The only down side is the door will not use gravity to automatically close. So when your little kid goes in there grabs a popsicle, doesnt close the door all the way, which leaves the light on, which warms the freezer, for 2 damn days, and you discover 80% of the contents completely thawed out.

I've had this happen on multiple occasions, so I got rid of the kids and kept the upright.

I've had both chest and upright. I never want a chest again.

I obtained my chest freezer when we were cleaning out my grandparents house after they had both passed away. I hauled a ton of old food off to the dumpster before loading it in a U-Haul truck to bring back home. This was back in 2015, and we threw away anything that wasn't labeled or more than a year old. Which wasn't much since he had trouble getting around and had been living with my Mom a good bit, and not at his usual gardening. We spent Thanksgiving at their house one last time, and spent all week getting it ready to sell, so we ate as much as we could out of there too. There were some good cuts of deer meat in there, a ton of black-eyed peas, and other vegetables from his garden, but man it was a mess.

I got some crates that stack and use those. Four of them, with veggies to the left, meats to the right. Also keep bags of ice and frozen gallon bottles of water in there in the middle to help if we get a power outage. It is still running great 6 years later, and we get something out or put something in a few times a week. Yeah, my parents have an upright one in their basement and it is much easier, but this was free and still works. If it dies, I'll buy a small upright to keep down there next to the beer fridges.

I've had a chest freezer for the last 10 years or so.

I just switched to an upright and it is 1000% better.

The only reason to get a chest freezer is if its free.

When you look through the stuff in your freezer, do you want it to be easy or difficult?

I prefer upright for organizational purposes

I have a chest freezer. But I'm getting an upright delivered tomorrow for the exact same reason. I've had a damn rabbit from best stop in my freezer because I forgot about the thing. I'm tired of having to try to keep it organized.
