Just bought a new house and would like to purchase a freezer. I always have plenty access to bulk shrimp, crawfish, fish and deer sausage. What’s better?

I have both. Prefer upright but found a great deal on a smallish chest freezer. Bought it but use some containers from the dollar store to help with organization. Also only keep one meat type in it so it’s easier to manage.

With prices right now chest freezers are also at an advantage. The same upright I bought a year or two ago has increased 30-40%.

Upright. It’s a PITA to dig stuff out of the bottom of a chest freezer were things in the bottom tend to stay buried for years.

Someone on the OB board called his a frozen garbage can. After owning one for a couple of years I now know why he calls it that. Sold it and got an upright. Doesn't hold as much but everything is visible accessable and we don't have stuff hiding in the bottom for 5 years and then tossed once found.

Upright by far. Just gave away a chest freezer and replaced it with another upright. Things get to the bottom of a chest and forgotten. And its a PITA when somethings on the bottom.

Looks like it's going to be a personal preference, so I hope you arrive at the best decision for you.

We have a small "deep freeze" chest style that has served us well. It stores a little bit of frozen gumbo, frozen deboned stuffed chickens, other meats, etc.

This. We have 2 small ones. The small ones don't take up much space and hold a lot, relative to their size. Because they are small, keeping them organized is not difficult.

Upright for ease of access to stuff. Chest freezers tend to have stuff remain on the bottom, buried until they are no longer good to eat.

Plus all that bending over to get stuff out. I have a large frost-free upright and would NEVER have a chest freezer.

How many times a day do you go into your deep
Freezer? Is it really that taxing?

Small chest freezer next to an old refrigerator/ freezer outside. The small chest freezer is organized and works well. Like your coat closet-
Don’t put so much shite in it that you can’t remember what you have or where it is and forgetting shite for 5
Years isn’t that
Much of a problem

On average, twice a day in the freezer, either putting stuff in or taking stuff out to cook or heat up since I do a lot of cooking in bulk.

No, it's not that taxing to have a chest type freezer physically, just a PITA, especially when digging stuff out the bottom that is only about 6 inches off the floor.

We have a small chest freezer. It's organized well and I keep a list of what's in there. Works well for the two of us.

Fair enough. I keep stuff like seafood and frozen veggies (French fries) in my chest freezer along
With some ducks/geese. But I keep 3-4 bags of ice in it as well. Essentially the stuff I don’t use that often.
I understand your point tho.

Upright is much better for ease of use and access. The only down side is the door will not use gravity to automatically close. So when your little kid goes in there grabs a popsicle, doesnt close the door all the way, which leaves the light on, which warms the freezer, for 2 damn days, and you discover 80% of the contents completely thawed out.

That sounds fairly specific But yes.

upright you can actually get to and see everything in there

with a chest you can only see whats on the top and everything below 6" is frozen into a solid mass you have to throw away when you clean it out once a year

every chest freezer we ever had caused us to throw out lots and lots of wasted food every year, go with the upright
