At midnight on Tuesday (June 30), the Chart Room in the French Quarter got new owners and a new name.

According to public records, the bar at 300 Chartres St. will now be called the Chartres Bar and the owners are Michael Batten and Brett Alexander.

This sucks, Chart Room was one of the best non-tourist bars in the Quarter. It certainly won't be the same, especially given how quickly they're changing the name.

I go there almost every night after work. The new owners are so delusional with what makes a good bar. They want to "clean it up" and add lighting. Only an idiot would change a successful cash only business. The dark no frills cheap drinks heavy pours are what people enjoy about the place. Not to mention the best jukebox in the city.

Sounds like that's exactly what they're doing.

I don't know. Lafitte's juke box is pretty good.

It will be replace by one of those Bose music touch POS deals. Totally kills the vibe of a bar. Instead of a specific soundtrack for the bar any assclown can walk in and play Justin Beaver etc crap

That blows. Chart Room was a great dive bar. I hope they at least keep serving 10oz. Budweiser cans.

What. The frick.

Why are people so stupid? If you don't want a dive bar, don't buy a successful dive bar; there are plenty of floundering clean, well lit bars in the Quarter you can buy.

I heard the opposite. Leaving it as is. Of course with new owners comes some changes, but it will still be a dive bar with same jukebox and same name.

That was my buddies dad's place until he died last year. My buddy lives in Little Rock and I guess this means he decided against running the place by proxy. I hate that.

Mr. Newman was a cool old coot. He stayed in the bar during Katrina. We stopped by a day after the storm to bring him the one thing he asked for: "More ammunition."
