Anyone ever use one of these to chargrill oysters out of the shell? Thoughts?

If you have the shell, why not just place the shell directly on the grill?

If you don't have the shell and you're thinking about buying a container of shucked oysters from the grocery store, my advise would be don't waste your time. I've done it multiple times. I can guarantee you will be disappointed.

Looks like an oyster puzzle to me. I'm too damn old for puzzles.

Yeah id definitely use the shell if i shucked them. Was mainly wondering how they would come out if I cooked out of shell from the container. This is for a gift too.

I don't see how you get much char on them in that, but I've used cooking clam shells and I now have the steel shells. They're great. I've given them as gifts. Much more like an oyster shell since they're single. You can use them for other things as well.

GG, are you able to get a good char on the oysters? They seem so large that the flame wouldn't really touch the oyster.

They work well enough, particularly if you have large oysters. I put more than one in them and the butter overflows a bit to get a flame up. Not too much different from the shells which are also larger than the oyster inside.

And, they'll last longer than we will, so leave them to someone when you pass on.

They work well. Most of the people I've given them to have ordered more of them.

I ordered from the site I linked in my post above. They're very nice folks. I think I called a few times to order because I had a nice chat with some of the family. They used to own a restaurant in the Covington area, I believe.

Better deal on Amazon with Prime free shipping, I'm sure. They're shipping is a bit steep if you ask me. They're $35 for the no frills dozen sans shipping.

Fitzmorris was pimping the Loftin ceramic oyster shells today. Gave away 4 sets this week via "chow number" drawings. Those are about $70 a dozen.

I have an old chow number I think it was 455 or somewhere around there.

$65 a dozen is steep because when I'm charbroiling I've got a few people. I have probably 100 scallop shells I use and when done I run through the dishwasher. Might have to scrub a few just a bit but they actually seem to get seasoned after using a bunch.

And a lot cheaper.
