I'm just getting started, I made one of those 1 gallon home brew kits this weekend, gonna be tough waiting a month to taste it. I'm looking into upgrading to a 5 gallon setup, any suggestions for equipment? I made a trip to my local home brew store, and they have alot of information, but they talk way over my head on most subjects. Any other advice is most appreciated.

One of the starter kits from either the local store or websites like Northern brewer, More Beer, or Austin Homebrew are good starts. I would recommend looking into a Homebrew Club locally as they can provide a lot of knowledge and experience. Depending on what type of learner you are the club could walk you through the process hands on (which was great for me), but if you learn by reading then there are plenty of online resources at sites like homebrewtalk.com and books like the Complete Guide to Homebrewing (which is the book that taught me at the beginning). There are a lot of really advanced books that offer lots of information but are probably a little over your head at the moment. And of course the fine people on TD.com

How to Brew by John Palmer is a great read. I've yet to do my own home brewing yet though.

I screwed up and got married and don't have the space just yet.

Thanks for all the info, and I will check out the sites listed. Do any of you use any fancy equipment like a hydrometer or refractometer?

Hydrometer is critical. Refracto not so much.

Picked one up off of E-Bay last week. Glad to have it. Never felt like using a hydrometer but the refract is nice.

If you want to know the abv of your beer you're going to need one. You could still brew and enjoy without it if you aren't curious.
