My wife and I go to Birmingham for getaway weekends almost as often as we go to NOLA just because it's closer, and we have some family there. We usually go with intentions of hitting up Frank Stitt's restaurants, and making it pretty formal. So I'm somewhat knowledgeable about that scene. We are going next weekend with different intentions-- just to get away and unwind. We aren't making any reservations and I'm not packing a sportscoat. We are staying downtown near UAB and Five Points like usual, but I'm looking for divey or casual joints with good food and good beer selections.

The wife is a State grad so we would like to have a good spot to eat brunch on Saturday and watch the Bama game. We are well acquainted with the J Clyde but they don't open until 2:00. So this is clutch. After that, any cool spots with tv's, good beer and food will be great to get us through the football Saturday. Are any of the breweries cool spots to watch games? I know they have food trucks. Any local knowledge is welcome and appreciated.

Multiple sub-scenes to check:

Avondale (big-daddy of hipster scene)
Lakeview (where there is, of course, no lake)
2nd Avenue North (more of a nighttime scene)
Pepper Place (all about dat food and beer, check Hop City)

I'm sure all points will have the game on this Saturday; pick anywhere.

Bonus tips: Good People and/or Cahaba Brewing, and the block containing music clubs Workplay and Iron City.

Meanwhile I will be heading home in the opposite direction to BR this weekend. Just look for the guy with the LSU hat and I'll say hello.

For casual dining:

El Barrio or Bamboo on second north. Paramount and Carrigans are downtown bars with good (and somewhat different bar food). Paramount might be where you should go for the game. I'd also check to see if state has an alumni watch party somewhere.

Lots of newish venues in Avondale. Post Office Pies, SAWs, Fancys (burgers), and TE place in the old gas station are all worth trying.

In lakeview, I don't care for Slice as much as others but the pizza is good and the scenes is cool. the owners have a place called Sky Lab around the corner that is good (food and drinks). Also a tapas place that is less than impressive.

Bettola in Pepper Place is one of my favorites. Haven't been to Ovenbird yet but it is a more causal spot opened by Chris Hastings. You sound like you probably already know this, but Hastings hot n hot is one of the best fine dining spots in the city. Gianmarcos in Homewood is also very very good but not necessarily as causal as what you are looking for.

I like all the breweries except for Avondale. trim tab is great beer in a unique spot. Cahaba is solid and their new location is incredible. Good People is best known. They have a double IPA that you may be familiar with. Ghost Train just opened. Would call head about the game at any of these spots. GP is probably your best shot?

New rooftop bar downtown that's a cool place to get a drink. On top of the Redmont Hotel.

I'm not up to speed on brunch. Tratorria maybe (in addition to some of the places mentioned above).

Welcome to Birmingham.

Suggested Brunch/Lunch options:
Saws in Crestline would be a great place to eat and watch football.
Mrs Fancys
Skycastle - great brunch and lots of TVs
Five (not a whole lot of TVs, would have to get a good spot)

I have never watched football at Avondale Brewery but they have several TVs. There are several restaurants (Saws Juke Joint, Post Office) right by and you can take food into the brewery and eat.

AL.com recently posted this article of the 50 essential Bham restaurants. I think it is a pretty good list.

Hope y'all have a great trip

barrio has a decent brunch ... opens at 11? ... ovenbird is new and is getting some talk ... for the game, check out iron city ... not sure what their set up is, but they advertise game 'watches' from time to time ...

These are great recs. I would throw in any Saws location. I like avondale for the wings. Post Office Pies for pizza.

For beer, I'd go Good People, Hop City, and Avondale.

Did it re-open? It had been closed for a year or two now.

Crestwood locatoin has the wings as well, and is a little better for a game/getting a seat, but you can't go wrong with any of them.

Ovenbird

is awesome. Hoping the little lady picks it tonight to go to.

And the Crestline Saw's is the best Saw's imo. It and Oteys are good neighborhood dive-type joints

All good suggestions in this thread

Once it gets a little later, I'd suggest hitting up Parkside in Avondale...not so much for the drinking necessarily, but so you can eat at Hotbox

You could spend an entire day just in Avondale.

Food: fancy's, hotbox, Melt, PostOfficePies, hot diggity dog, Saw's, etc
Drinks: 41st, Parkside, Avondale, (that new speakeasy bar), etc

I've heard good things about Fancy's on 5th as well which is also in Avondale, but I haven't been yet to confirm the hype.

I've been a few times, and it has been good. Saturday for lunch is your best bet, as it is usually packed at dinner hours. Oysters were good for not being on the coast, decent beer selection, atmosphere is good.

The burgers I've had have been very good, though they've started rotating the menu some which pissed me off. They had a chorizo burger (half ground beef/half chorizo patty) with fried jalepenos, pepperjack cheese and a chipotle aioli. I also put an egg on it for reasons . Damn it was good, but wasn't there the last time I went. Also, their Keylime pie was pretty tasty.

Yeah, I haven't been yet, but I can see it from my office. They had been working on it for a while but I think it is opened back up recently. I just looked and they have stuff set up out there.

Hell yea. I use to love going there. You never know what you were going to get. It was either going to be extremely chill or a complete shitfest
