There's not a correct answer....too many good places,,,,some of which are:

Curra's- More interior mex though
Polvos
El Azteca
Enchiladas Y Mas
La Mancha
Julio's

I usually hit Curra's.

I like el arroyo but it's not for everyone. Kind of dingy.

Is Baby Acapulco's still around?

Can't speak to their food. Everclear purple or blue margarita though!! Second one ruined a bachelor party I attended about 20 years ago.

Looks like they're still kickin'.....but I'm sure a taco deli or torchy's will gentrify their arse out.

I haven't tried TacoDeli yet, but my MIL likes it a lot.

ETA: Are we thinking of different places? El Azteca closed

I eat it for lunch sometimes....the Dallas one in Oak Cliff. They are wildly inconsistent. The exact meal will be good one time and bland the next. I've eaten at the Austin one a few times as my wife likes it. But it always so-so.

An odd thing about Mexican food in this town, from when I was a kid to now: Most places only do one or two really quality things, then decent for the rest. But Houston and San Antone have the best.

Not bad. I enjoy Curra's the most. Enchiladas y Mas is decent, but is beloved because of the low prices.

La Mancha
Julio's

Absolutely not.

- Vivo (Best Cheese enchiladas with proper chili con carne sauce. Puffy Taco's are also great)
- Habanero's
- Amaya's (Handmade and fried taco shells. Get the Crispy Tacos, make one of them beef fajita, and get a side of queso with the meal)
- Licha's (Mexico City style food. Huaraches are great, and I've tried most of the entrees, which are all amazing)
- El Patio (Get the El Patio Special)
- Matt's El Rancho (More a nostalgia thing for me and most locals, but I love the Bob Armstrong queso, brisket tacos, and Matt Jr Fries, Carne Guisada
- Chain Alert***Papasitto's (great salsas, fajitas, anything off the fire. Not into anything else)

Zappas is right — there's no "correct" answer here, and there are more than enough options.

When we talk Mexican, these are the spots I keep in rotation:

Tochy's Tacos — casual dining; great tacos; a "must-eat" for visitors
Maudie's — Pretty standard Tex-Mex that's conveniently located to my home, so we go here often. Good eats all around.
Matt's El Rancho — This is the spot we go with a big group of friends to sit, drink and eat for a while.
Fonda San Miguel — This is the "nicest" one on my list, and it's not Tex-Mex so much as interior. If you're looking for classier dinner or a nicer dining experience, go here.

Sports bars... Shoal Creek Saloon is the LSU/Saints spot. Lavaca Street Bar is good too. There are definitely plenty of spots downtown and on Rainey that'll have big games on. Midway Field House was a legit sports bar too, but I'm pretty sure they closed...

Back Spin Texas Sports Bar
Corner of Mopac and Slaughter in So. Austin. Good food. Good brunch.

Enchiladas Y Mas

Is not going to be the best Tex-Mex or blow you away by any means, but they do a few things really well and have been around a long time. It's your small Family Owned Dive Tex-Mex place. Their enchiladas are very good, as should be expected. They do an awesome migas...trust me. Their salsa is excellent and very spicy. Their margaritas are cheap and will knock you on your arse. Unless you are a big ole baw, I wouldn't recommend more than 2 unless you want to go to sleep soon after you get home.

I second everything Zappas said as usual, but I don't share his opinion on Tacodeli. I've never been disappointed.

Lavaca St Bar is more of a spot for the younger crowd.

Also look into Shiner Saloon, the Austin Krewe of LSU will be there.
