More than likey an aged Porterhouse or Ribeye steak, cooked rare-medium rare with a baked potato for a side.
Price range I'd put at around $50
Its been a while since ive looked around or went to any wine tastings, wondering if any fellow posters have made any discoveries that they were pleasantly surprised with, etc. Any suggestions?

A good Italian, like a Brunello or a Barolo goes well with steaks.

Argentine wines are where it's at if you want cost effective yet quality reds.

Joseph Kent "Gris Gris" if you can find it.

I think that big, tannic red wines go best with beef, specifically steak. I think the tannin is a good foil for the richness of steak. I prefer Bordeaux, or wines made from Bordeaux varietals (Cab Sauv, Cab Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec) over other options. I find Pinot is overwhelmed by beef, and most Aussie shiraz is too out of balance for my tastes to match with really any food.

Agreed. I'd go with something dark, rich and tannic. At the moment, there's a Finca del Origen 2010 Malbec out there for $10--sure there are better wines for under $50 but this one is phenomenal for the price--tastes like a $25 bottle to me.

If you're willing to spend $50 retail, you can find great wines to pair with a steak.
The one that surprised me the most was the 04 Peju Cab.
It was phenomenal.

I'd go with The Prisoner, if you insist on that price range.
