That settles it and that the chef/owner is named Tobias.

That low ceilinged basement space feels really claustraphobic as well. The hipsterishness of the staff doesn't bother me, but I did think it was sort of lame when they jumped on that bandwagon to make a big deal about changing the name of their General Lee's Chicken.

I'll still order it by the original name. Only complaint I have is you leave there reeking of fried food.

Glassman, went to Calypso in Harah Ridge today for lunch. Good little spot for Latin American food.

Its in the 10 Thousand Block of Jeff Hwy, across from Curtis and past where, as memory serves me, Mimi's was.

TW, got the beef and cheese arepas and the lunch buffet (arroz con pollo, brisket, lentil soup - which was fantastic, and these sweet corn cakes with cheese). The arepas were very good. Super nice folks, wish them well.

Sweet. I'll have to go soon. Ideal Market's portion size is huge. Have my lunch for tomorrow.

lol, I had Ideal for lunch too. Still have the plantains on my desk. Had shrimp fried rice, potato salad, mixed fajitas, and plantains. Odd combination.

When you go to Ideal Mart, do you just point to what you want or can you speak Spanish?

Some of them can speak English but I do a lot of pointing. Lunch is easier b/c items are labeled in English but breakfast is a different story. Why they don't have bilingual employees in areas with customer interaction is mind boggling to me. This is in the middle of Metairie not Houston.

I tried to get some yellow rice from the hot bar the other day and that wasn't the case. After about a minute of confusion a lady in line behind me had to play translator.

Red's Chinese has gotten very good, as of late. I live nearby (nah - not a hipster) and went there about 2 weeks after it opened. Was bad - so damn spicy hot it was almost inedible (and, I typically like spicy foods). Waited 2 months and gave it another chance. have been there about 5 times since, and its good. But, if your dining in (I usually do take-out) its typically hot inside of the place, and the wait staff is very hipsterish.

I read some initial articles where Tobias claimed to be friends with Danny Bowien (founder of Mission Chinese), but then I saw later that Tobias was fired from Mission Chinese NY after 6 months. I wonder whether Danny okay'd the opening of a Mission knockoff in New Orleans, but I am guessing not based on Tobias' answer in recent article:
quote:

How much of what you do at Red's Chinese do you owe to Mission Chinese Food?

The bottom line is: Does it taste good. At a lot of fusion restaurants, the menu reads well in print, but the execution is stupid. It's too f-ed with. Or it's not enough food. I want to be busy and cooking. I don't want to be a slow restaurant and only have people who can afford it.

Not a great answer. I think it's crappy if he did not get an okay from the Mission Chinese founder. I have not looked in a while, but his initial menu was supposedly 'inspired' by Mission, but was closer to a straight copy with a couple local ingredients changed to fit New Orleans.
