For a lower/medium priced whiskey I like my woodford reserve bourbon.

Not bourbon, but I make my old fashioneds with Bulleit Rye. However, if I were to use bourbon, I would likely go with Buffalo Trace. I did have one with Eagle Rare a couple of weeks ago and really enjoyed it.

This. Any number of brands work fine.

Everything else you add to the drink makes it too sweet for me if you use bourbon. The bite of rye helps offset that and makes for a more balanced drink in my view.

I like a good rye instead of bourbon in an old fashioned.

They are mostly saying and rye will do. It's a cocktail, so a mixed drink does not require the most expensive liquor to be in it. And, as answered, a bourbon tends to make the drink sweeter, which I like on occasion.

So to answer OP's question again, any Rye will make a traditional Old Fashioned, and if you want the drink to be sweeter, use bourbon. I tend to use Woodford Rye, JD Rye and any of my high dollar bourbons.

I make most of my Old Fashioneds with rye whiskey instead of bourbon, but sometimes I do use bourbon or even a half and half mixture.

Favorite ryes for an OF:

Old Forester Rye
Knob Creek Rye
High West Double Rye
Sagamore Spirits Double Oak Rye
Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye

Brandy

j/k

I am not super picky for an Old Fashioned because of all the other flavors and sweetness added. But, I do tend to use rye more now than before. Otherwise, any sub $30 bottle you know you like. I could live with any of BT/Wild Turkey/Bulleit/EC/Woodford or even Early time/AA/Benchmark.

Rum. Seriously.

Though for an answer to your question, i've really liked the woodford double oaked for an old fashioned. Has been very good the last few times i've done it.

I would bet the majority of lay folks when saying "which bourbon should I use for an old fashioned" really mean, "which whiskey should I use for an old fashioned".

Anyway, my two favorite whiskeys to use for an old fashioned are Old Forester 100 proof rye for a lower end pour, or Willett Family Estates 4 yr rye for a more expensive pour.

I don't disagree, but OP specifically asked for bourbon recommendations...? Not everyone prefers the bite of a Rye Carry on - it's trivial.
