I used to like the variety of middle eastern food BR has in comparison to NOLA. We just started getting good options after the storm.

BR has okay Indian, good chinese/ japansese/ vietnamese and lebanese.
But for BR to compete with Austin, DC houston, NYC, LA, San fran it needs more

quote:Perhaps my favorite Baton Rouge restaurant was a killer Jamaican/Caribbean place called Ronnie's Ribs located next to Hi Nabor on Jones Creek. The food was incredible. Sadly, every time I would eat there I would be one of only a few people staring out at a line of cars wrapped around Burger King. Caribbean and Ethiopian food would be an awesome addition, but Baton Rouge just doesn't want anything to do with it.
Baton Rouge needs Caribbean food
My second favorite ethnic restaurant is now closed as well. It was a Colombian restaurant called Montana's on Coursey. Best plate lunch around in the Bandeja Paisa. It's a shame they're no longer around.

It ain't gonna happen until you bring in restaurateurs with fresh minds to the area. Until then, expect the same stuff...fried catfish, poboys, hamburgers, steak, chicken and pizza. Restaurateurs do what they know, and the before mentioned is what they know in Baton Rouge.

Check out the Bullfish Bar and Kitchen. We stopped in and got a drink the other night and talked to the owner. He is going for a Caribbean/Cajun fusion style food menu. Hopefully it is more Caribbean than cajun. The space is a massive upgrade from Marty J'S.

Persian. There really should be more Persian restaurants everywhere. Also Peruvian and Morrocan.

You don't say? How the hell could Baton Rouge ever compete with any of those cities? Get real man. New Orleans can't even compete with those cities

Veronica prepared for me ackee with saltfish, a traditional Jamaican dish which should be on anyone's ethnic cuisine bucket list. Baton Rouge had no idea this was actually an option at the time. Her chicken wings were incredible as well. I loved the goat, turkey necks, and vegetables on her lunch buffet.
RIP

good chinese
What? Lb for Lb for a greater metro of 820K, BR has to rank in the top ten for Worst Chinese in all of the USA.
MK Wong's Chinese Inn(was chinese food chef at Sabin's as young man) original Fla Blvd location in late 1970s and later Airline location from 1980ish to 1994ish was BR's best Chinese by far. Plus Royal Hawaii in Corporate Mall and later Jefferson Hwy, Hunan's ebb and flows from meh to good, plus now Omi's up and downs in consistency..a few of BR's only legit Chinese.
And BR's Lebanese is more than ok, the original Serops on Govt when a stand-alone location in 1980s/1990s with all of Vasken's full attention(and before many disciples splintered off to open their own chains), was one of the few BR dining establishments that had New Orleanians coming this direction(like Rougeans heading to NOLA). BR has better overall Lebanese dining than many major metros, though all the multiple locations have caused many to become watered-down takee-outee grade in quality.

You're asking for BR to compete with 2 of the best food cities in the world and 2 others who are up near the best in the US.
You're asking a city whose dining population is made up of older white people to eat Caribbean, Ethiopian, and South American. Lol. Sushi is branching out for them.
