New construction: Can anyone give some solid advice on what brands are best or dare I say "good enough" for a person that isn't a chef but loves to cook? I would love to deck out my kitchen with Subzero and Wolf but have a feeling that is overkill. I do want a gourmet style kitchen but are there brands that are less expensive which do just as good? I'm willing to pay a little extra... like Frigidaire, GE, Samsung, Kitchenaid, etc...I'm so lost on this!

We did our kitchen in Frigidaire Professional ss series. The stove and oven get stuff hot. The fridge and freezer keep it cold. We wanted something nice but didn't need or want they expensive really PRO stuff. We got most of it at US appliance. We did go with the full size fridge and full size freezer. I could t imagine having a regular fridge now.

I know a lot of people who don't cook with Subzero appliances in their kitchen.

I would certainly do it if price wasn't an issue. But not paying $10K for a fridge But yea, I know what you mean...

I'm looking to renovate my primary house and secondary condo soon. I'll be putting Subzeros in both. Ranges, fridge, ovens, etc.

Only reason I'm doing it this way is because both myself and my GF cook a lot and we can afford it. She's sick of the white fridge in my "mancave"

Stay away from GE appliances.

Frigidaire is legit (Electrolux = Frigidaire)

Frigidaire owns GE appliances now, but they haven't merged the product lines yet, I expect good things will come of this.

I don't know your budget on stoves or ranges. I find Dacor makes great ovens and Capital makes stoves that blow thermidor out the water.

Subsero fridges last and keep you food fresh longer, that is fact. But starting at $9k they are pricey.

My general advice to people is get the cheapest appliances you can. All appliances made no (with the exception of premium brands like Viking, Wolf, Sub-Z) are made with engineered obsolesce The cheaper ones last longer and are cheaper to repair.

I had an LG fridge yesterday that would cost me $700 in parts to fix before mark-up. It's nuts what they want for controls and electronics now.

Most people pick appliances on pure aesthetics though, so it's hard to tell people what to get, because looks play a significant factor.

If it were me, I would go all Whirlpool. (Whirlpool includes Kitchenaid, Maytag, Amana, Roper and Admiral)

American made and a strong warranty.

(The frigidaire professional series shown above is legit, Do not buy the kit to join the fridge and the freezer together at the place you buy the appliances, it's less than half that price online - saves you over $120)

Kenmore also sells those badged as a kenmore. Any Kenmore fridge that has a model number starting with 456 was made by Frigidaire.
But DO NOT get any LG made Kenmore (starts with a 606 or 656)

Having a fridge and freezer that stay broken makes cooking difficult. Repair folks love them though.

what stays broke?

I work on Sub zeros that are 20-30 years old and still kicking. My sub-zero is from 1998 and is still kicking.
They are actually very cheap in the way od parts, especially if you have a timer controlled 500 series.

Much better than a GE, in which you know that every single time some one calls you for a repair you are changing ether the main board or the inverter board for the compressor.

ALL new appliances are shittier as far as longevity than appliances from the 90's and early 00's. This Energy Star crap has crippled the appliance consumer, while bolstering the pockets of the repairmen.

In the folk's ~15 year old house: fridge and freezer have broken at least 5 times each starting when they were less than 2 years old. The microwave has been replaced. The ovens have been repaired twice. Now it just beeps randomly. I forget how much it was going to cost to fix that. But the beeping wasn't annoying enough to make my mom cough up the money to replace whatever needs to be replaced. I don't think the ice maker was wolf/sub zero, but it's been tossed too. Repairing everything became expensive as hell as soon as it was all out of warranty. The bottom of the line fridge and freezer they've got in the garage, that they bought at the same time, have never broken. Which is great since they spend a lot of time moving everything from the kitchen into them.

To my knowledge the Sub Zero stuff in the house I grew up in is still chugging along after 25 or 30 years with no issues. And maybe it was just a bad period for them.

I have no idea what I'm going to get when I redo my kitchen, which is one of the reasons I haven't done it. The stuff that came with the house isn't the best, and it sure as hell isn't the best looking, but at least it works. I don't want to spend a fortune on a new kitchen just to hang out with a repair guy. Nothing personal, I'm sure you're great, but you're also expensive.

Check out NXR range, zephyr hood, Bosch fridges and dishwashers. Also like all frigedaire products if you need them all to match.

BlueStar stove if you are serious about stovetop heat and need an oven to fit full sheet pans, Broan professional series for high CFM hoods at a fraction of the fancy brands.....fridges are highly personal. What one person likes another finds useless. I bought and returned a bottom freezer model due to flimsy slides; now I have a kenmore side by side that is noisy as hell. But it was cheap, so I can just get a new one in 8 years or so.

DCS makes some damn fine ovens and cooktops. Good enough for the folks at ATK, I am sure they would be good enough for what I do in the kitchen. We are about to start building at the end of the month, need some recs on a good fridge that won't break the bank.

I have one of these. Do you know if there is a adjustment for the over temperature?

What about Electrolux? I'm thinking of doing entire kitchen in Electrolux... since Frigidaire makes them would that be a safe bet? Thanks!

We have Frigidaire appliances throughout. No issues whatsoever. I wouldn't hesitate.
