My parents have been doing it for awhile and swear by it. Mom gave me one of their scoby's and let my first batch ferment for a week. Looking forward to trying it tomorrow.
Used black tea and honey for my first brew.

What is Kombucha?
Known as the “Immortal Health Elixir” by the Chinese and originating in the Far East around 2,000 years ago, kombucha is a beverage with tremendous health benefits.
Kombucha is a fermented beverage of black tea and sugar (from various sources including cane sugar, fruit or honey) that’s used as a functional food. It contains a colony of bacteria and yeast that are responsible for initiating the fermentation process once combined with sugar. After being fermented, kombucha becomes carbonated and contains vinegar, b-vitamins, enzymes, probiotics and a high concentration of acid (acetic, gluconic and lactic), which are tied with the following effects:
Improved Digestion
Weight Loss
Increased Energy
Cleansing and Detoxification
Immune Support
Reduced Joint Pain
Cancer Prevention
The sugar-tea solution is fermented by bacteria and yeast commonly known as a “SCOBY” (symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast). Although it’s usually made with black tea, kombucha can also be made with green tea too.
You can make kombucha yourself at home or buy it for $3–$5 a bottle at most health food stores and some coffee shops.
Beneficial Probiotics in Kombucha
An article published in the journal Food Microbiology established that the following probiotics make up this health elixir:
Gluconacetobacter (>85 percent in most samples)
Acetobacter (<2 percent)
Lactobacillus (up to 30 percent in some samples)
Zygosaccharomyces (>95 percent)
Ultimately, this cocktail of good bacteria interact together in a unique way to produce some unbelievable health benefits for those who drink it.

I usually just honeydip out of random port-a-potties, there's generally a good stew of Campylobacter and Clostridium brewing and I hear that they promote weight loss and cleansing.

The Chinese also think ingesting rhino horn is a medical cure-all...just saying.

I'm a big fan of beer with lacto and maybe a touch of acetobacter present

My extent to anything like that is green tea and apple cider vinegar on a regular basis. Let me know how it goes

i don't doubt that kombucha when taken regularly is beneficial to your health, but it's more expensive than the payoff imo. Like someone else said, Apple cider vinegar is my cure all

I occasionally drink it usually after working out. I love it and I feel like it makes me feel good but that's probably just a placebo effect. I'd drink it more often but it's expensive.

how is making it yourself expensive?
because it's so inexpensive to make is why there hasn't been any research done in the US to verify its health claims. no company has insensitive to prove or disprove the claims

Nice. Is it that much pricier than your typical tea? I know you'd probably have to drink it a few times to really figure out how affective it is.

I drink it regularly. Made my own for a while but now I just drink 1/2 a bottle every day or two.

There's actually many research papers on it. Pubmed search comes up with 54.

I use to drink it pretty often. Love the taste of it and it seemed like it made me feel better but probably placebo effect. It is expensive if you buy it. Most brands are about four bucks at whole foods. I really like the ones with chia seeds.

No.
And you sure are banging the drum pretty loud.

Now I do agree with that.

nah, should be the same price as regular tea. to make it all you need is:
- a gallon of purified water without the chlorine so it won't harm the scoby (I use a gallon of drinking water from walmart for 88 cents)
- cane sugar, honey, or molasses (has to be real sugar and non raw honey)
- whatever kind of tea you want to brew
- a scoby you can grow yourself or have someone give you

my goal is to drink 16 oz a day, like this guy LINK

people have been swearing by its affects for many many years
my mom for example was having bad shoulder pain and having to take steroid medicine for it. didn't stop hurting till she started drinking kombucha.

lol that's stupid. should be the same price as regular tea since it costs the same to make

umm yes? one of the known side effects of drinking kombucha is it makes your poop flow better.
people have to be careful and just drink a small amount when they first start drinking it because of this.

In more detail – the probiotics in the kombucha caused my poop to move fast. Watch out for that in the beginning.
In case you have seen the many commercials on TV about how the probiotics in yogurt can keep you regular, keep in mind that kombucha is WAY more powerful.
The probiotics are intense and that’s what makes this drink so desirable, especially if your normal diet needs a little help.

Detoxification: Kombucha possesses a remarkable ability to detoxify the body. It contains a powerful detoxifier glucuronic acid which binds the toxins entering the liver and eliminates them out of the body via kidneys.

Never tried it but I'm sure there are cheaper methods in getting probiotics (the good bacteria) in your gut.
