Last minute couples trip to watch the ponies at Fairgrounds Saturday. Any can’t miss places for dinner Sat nt. near the track? Or are we better off coming back to quarter area? What about recommendation Sunday for lunch before we head back? Staying in quarter, although willing to drive/cab to wherever. Prefer casual attire. Thanks for any and all suggestions

Cafe Degas and Lola's are good. Don't think I'd call them "can't miss" though.

You should go check out Toups. The chef is currently on the show Top Chef and it's a fine restaurant. It also fits your request for casual. Has one of the best charcuterie boards in town.

Saturday evening: All these Restaurants are within walking distance to the track, just a few blocks and the area is very safe. They are also right next to each other, so grab a drink and peruse the menu's while you walk from place to place.
Casual - Lola's, 1000 Figs, Cafe Degas, Nona's or Liuzza's before 7:00PM. Liuzza's will serve up some pretty good New Orleans style food, strong drinks and cold beer. Have eaten at all except 1000 Figs and have heard good things about it. There is also a wine "bar" called swirl that will do cheese and charcuterie platters with bottles of wine, and it's right next to 1000 Figs.

Sante fe is another great restaurant that I would recommend if you are in the mood for Mexican. It's right next to degas and across the street from lolas.

Go to Crescent City Steakhouse. It may not be the best of the places listed, but it most fits as a post day at the track destination.

Several good ones but Café Degas would be my first choice.
