Boss, that looks terrific! You might be the boudin king cake or just any old time cake specialist. That's cooked all the way through and doesn't look dry at all. Now, you need to write up your recipe for the recipe book unless, of course, you plan to start selling those, which I believe you could do successfully. A fine darn job. Your patience and diligence were virtues.

I have so much enjoyed this thread. Occasionally I will attempt to recreate something that you F&DB wizards will suggest or document, and my efforts turn out to be, um, at best edible. Boss et al, you have restored my confidence to try and try again. Blessings to you and your son.

Come back and tell us what you did and someone may be able to help or offer suggestions. You can ask while you're cooking, too. Might just be one little thing that needs tweaking.

Happy to help, always nice to have a useful, troll free thread around here. Now you know the basics of bread....try baking a plain loaf w your son this weekend. This recipe makes a great slicing loaf: LINK. The only semi exotic ingredient is dry milk.....you can use the carnation stuff in a box.

Also, the filled braid shaping technique can be used with pretty much any filling that's not too liquid. Think jam, spinach dip, chopped pecans, etc.

If you want to take it even further, make two filled ropes (use a dry filling), split each lengthwise, then braid the four strands, keeping the cut sides up. It's a twisted braid, like this. LINK

Just have to say I enjoyed the hell out of this thread. End product looks fantastic. I would pay $20 for that any day. Nice job and a cool memory for you and your son.
