South Africa Field Guide

Long shot most likely but was wondering if anyone has any advice on planning something like this.
I graduate college in December and I'm looking to take some time off before jumping straight into my career. One thing I found that I would like to do is explore and learn about the nature and wilderness of South Africa.
I found this one site that offers a 55 day Field Guide Level 1 course and is FGASA accredited. LINK
As I look further more into this, I was wondering if maybe anyone on this board has any experience or advice on a trip like this. Thanks fellas.

I had a very bad experience in South Africa. From that, my recommendation is to stay away. Go to Patagonia, Australia or something.

You got out of South Africa alive, that alone means it couldn't have been that bad.
I was born there and have no desire to go back ever again.
You need to put locks on your luggage or the airport employees will steal your shite. Hell they'll probably steal it even if you do lock them.
People will stand in public parking spaces and force you to pay them to move. If you call the cops, they probably won't respond and/or solicit a bribe themselves.

I was nearly sexually assaulted when getting mugged. I cancelled my trip early. And learned later that it's not a good idea for young white college kids to travel South Africa alone. Or even with people for that matter. Thankfully I had pocket knife.
Then the reservist police force guys just laughed at me and told me that I was lucky. Also told me I should vote for Obama (this was summer 2008) I was pissed, and slightly raised my voice. They then informed me that they can make sure the guy came back for me.

Vacations to go has a safari section you have to give them your email to be able to view the listings but they have a lot of stuff from budget to luxury.
Here is a 40-day safari for under $5500
Entrances and game drives in Serengeti and Etosha national parks and Ngorongoro Crater
Zanzibar excursion (3 days)
Spice plantation entrance and guided tour

I went about 17 years ago and had an incredible trip to South Africa, Victoria Falls Zimbabwe, and Zambia. Not sure what it's like now but Cape Town and the wine country were very European.
