Have hunters lost the ability to harvest a deer without putting corn out?

Well that is quite pathetic.

Several years ago I could set a clock by a huge boar Coming to a bear proof feeder at 3:55 pm. The feeder went off at 4. Mornings at 8. He would eat until all the corn was gone. Would not see a deer.
Since then, I have not put out a grain of corn at that stand and only a sack or 2 of rice bran a couple times a week. Don’t need to do that if there is a good acorn crop. Since then, I have seen one half grown bear there and kill several deer every year.
I killed a 140” 8 point last Year out of a friends stand that had not seen any corn or bran in a year.
Don’t need to put out tons of corn to see deer.

The bears were here naturally. Hunters feeders were not. I say the bears have seniority. Man , like Ben Lilly, came and killed them all. Lilly also killed a bunch of Ivory Billed peckers. And the Tensas nwr feels the need to name a bridge after him.
Do away with the feeders.

I agree with you in principal, except for the feeder part. I have no idea if that’s correct or not.

But if the bears are anything like the alligators in this state, then it’s not just a feeder problem and we need a controlled harvest. If the bears are nearly as prolific as gators at reproducing, we’re gonna be overrun by bears soon. Cause we’re overrun with gators now.

And your post is applicable to alligators.

Good catch, I meant the standards they have set for hunting to be allowed.

What would those be and how are unattainable?

I don't think I've see anything regarding what would be required to establish a hunting season beyond the post delisting monitoring period.

And something that could make all of this a moot point in the near future is the genetic studies going on. There is a growing body of genetic research suggesting that the "Louisiana Black Bear" does not even exist, and likely never did. It's just a black bear. If that happens, then we aren't even dealing with a formerly endangered species anymore.

This is going to boil down to whether the LWFC votes to open a season on them or not. Public support is there based on polls LDWF commissioned a few years ago.

They aren't anywhere close to this. A gator lays anywhere from 20 to 50 eggs, and nests every year. Bears produce maybe 3 or 4 cubs in a good year (average is 2), and breed every other year.

Bears become sexually mature between 3 and 6 years old, while alligators are between 10 and 15 years old. So let's say a bear starts reproducing at 4, and a gator starts at 12. The bear might produce 12 cubs in the 8 years between her becoming sexually mature and the gator becoming sexually mature. The alligator is going to lay and likely hatch more eggs than that in her first year.

It's just not even remotely close to the same.

Could they be as problematic as alligators? That's another question entirely, and subjective at best.

If a season for Black Bear was added realistically what do you do with the carcass? Very expensive to mount, probably not going to eat the meat, and if you’re just after the hide/fur that’s a lot of waste. Curious, I wouldn’t mind hunting bear but can’t see spending a grand after the fact.

Go ahead and pretend that deer hunting at a feeder takes skill. I'm all for it if it's legal btw.

I’m not pretending anything. I’ve killed way more deer jacking up tree with a bow and arrow than I have sitting in a box stand with a rifle. I was just pointing out how big of a tool you are.

Sounds a lot like alligator hunting

This may have changed, especially since how large the NELA population has gotten. But originally there was going to have to be a certain percentage of cross breeding between the north and south population group.

I was told the main reason you don’t see a season is the bleeding heart woman who was in control of the bear section of LDWF. She looks at them as pets and not actual wildlife that may/may not need to be managed through harvesting. We will probably never get accurate info that will lead to hunting as long as that is the mindset.

Most hunters these days don't have the luxury of being able to hunt daily due to all the land being leased up.

If you drive 100-300 miles and have a weekend to hunt it's nice to have corn to draw the deer in, not a big pile of trash a bear left after F'ing your feeder and stand up.

This time of the year deer will walk right by that 40 lbs of corn to get to the acorns that are falling. And besides, no mature buck will come to a feeder during the day. Hell most wont come at all. And like Ted Nugent I have no problem with feeding deer.

Buddy killed one a few years ago in Carolina not sure which one. He had smoked sausage made out of it and it was very good. Not just edible but good!
I wouldn’t hesitate to try it cooked another way based on my only research.
