I thought a player could redshirt as long as they didn't play after a certain point in the season. Isn't there a 20% rule? If so, JJ is still technically a redshirt.

If you are ever on the field when a snap occurs, the redshirt is gone. That is it.

You should know that NCAA rules indicate that any competition, regardless of time, during a season counts as one of your seasons of competition in that sport. It does not matter how long you were involved in a particular competition (for example, one play in a football game, one point in a volleyball match); you will be charged with one season of competition. No, he can't get a regular redshirt.

The number of snaps/games rule applies to medical redshirts. Is it possible JJ will get a medical redshirt? Yes. Highly unlikely, baring a freak practice injury though.
