To each their own. I have been shooting Just forward of the shoulder for years. I don’t like tracking through briars etc. Any animal will go down with the quickness when you disrupt the nervous system. That shot shocks the nervous system and liquified the wind pipe. Bang flop every time on whitetail and hogs

Gotcha

Growing up marsh hunting for whitetail made me never want to shoot for the lungs. Wasn’t worth the wet arse and extra drag from them running off an extra 50-100 yds

Yeah I understand it. I went on a site visit in an airboat in st Mary parish. It was all that floatant marsh. The deer hunters there were all shooting big calibers for those small deer. They said they didn’t want to have to track one in that stuff. Made sense

A .22 can kill anything with the right shot placement. That’s why I don’t like people saying the caveat of “with the right shot placement”. No shite!!

I want a larger caliber for more damage in times of not perfect shot placement.

I have shot 2 with a .270. One was about 80 yds and only went 50 yds, the other almost 200 yds and dropped in his tracks. 150 gr Nozzler Partion

I’m sure you do know some people who think that because you likely hang out with fellow yokels.

I think I’m headed to Wyoming for a hunt. I currently have a Winchester M70 featherweight. If I shoot 150 grain .270 will that be enough?

yes, nothing wrong with elk hunting with a .270

It’s a 270 not a 7mm08.

I remember your story well. I was telling someone about it the other day. You had someone watching over you.

.270 is perfectly fine for Elk. Craig Boddington once told me his longest shot on an Elk was about 400 yards with a .270 and I consider him to be pretty knowledgeable about what caliber to hunt with.

Before reading about your accident I would have probably bet a million dollars that a person could not survive being shot anywhere in the neck by a high powered rifle. I was under the false impression that Hydrostatic shock would have killed you.

Am I the only one who doesn't like a neck shot

Not just you. I can't see any legit reason someone would want a lesser surface area to hit the central nervous system.

Spine in the neck is like 3" across max.

Lungs heart etc are about 10-12" top to bottom and about the same front to back.
