Friends,

Our less cultured friends of the OT asked the question of what is your favorite discontinued food item? It's an excellent question we should all consider. While most of the responses from our friends there consisted of fast food items from Taco Bell or Pizza Hut or prepackaged junk filled with preservatives, the heart of the question gave me pause to consider some of the finest foods I have eaten, miss, and can no longer get. Sure there's an element of nostalgia for some of these items, but they also were all top dishes that I am sure would still be considered great today. If any of you would like to make such a list, I for one would love read them. I tried to limit the offerings to southeast Louisiana.

TulaneLSU's Top 10 dishes no longer available:

10. Cheese pizza, M's Fine and Mellow Cafe, Baton Rouge

9. Seafood stuffed artichoke, Carmine's, Bucktown

8. Fried whole flounder, Brunings, East End

7. Kolb's Schnitzel, Kolb's, New Orleans

6. Tasting of chocolate, Stella!, New Orleans

5. Shrimp poorboy, Uglesich's, New Orleans

4. Grilled porchini mushrooms over foie gras with black truffles, Stella!, New Orleans

3. Framboises a l'Anglaise, Chalet Brandt, Baton Rouge

2. Crabmeat raviolli, La Riviera, Metairie

1. Dover sole, Crozier's, Metairie

Yours,
TulaneLSU

I’m surprised no mention of anything from Cafe Nino. His Philly Cheese Steak is number 1 on my list.

Someone mentioned burgers at ground pati on sherwood but they had a chili there that was just fantastic. I don't know how many people even knew they had it.

When i was a kid, and the first taco bell opened on florida blvd, they used to have a burger that was made with the taco meat. It was great.

Friend,

This list is incomplete without sopapillas from Panchos, Metairie location. Raising the flag after gorging on a diarrhea-inducing Mexican buffet was always a treat for me as a kid. Smothering the fried sweet dough in honey really helped me understand later in life just how terrible my parents were when it came to diet and nutrition.

Yours,

String
