The people who say bowfishing is like spotlighting deer have obviously never been bowfishing. Most of the time you are shooting at a moving fish underwater at various depths, not at a stationary object at ground level. Until you get the hang of it it's not easy to shoot a redfish. I haven't been in a couple of years but I've seen multiple people miss every shot they took in a night

Gar balls and ray nuggets make me OK with this haul.

the blatant destruction of the marsh. The shooting of a legal limit of redfish isn't any different than catching a limit at night with minnow under a cork. Their tactics and propulsion are the issue.

I don’t think it should be outlawed but the bow fisherman I know are some trashy frickers. They can’t catch fish with a rod and reel like normal people so they have to go shoot them with a light at night. Pretty embarrassing if you ask me.

I would venture to say that shooting fish with a bow and arrow is a damn sight more challenging than popping a shrimp under a cork.

I must have missed the conversation where we decided there weren't enough gar.

I was once in a car that was struck by another car. Outlaw cars.

It should be noted that you entered its environment and somehow disturbed it by stepping on it or catching it with a hook or shooting it with an arrow.

I doubt that it just scurried into your home and stung you.

My friends free dive spearfish out of BSL through Curlew Pass. Shooting the fish is the easy part, free diving down 35’ in those rigs, in the waves and current is fricking nuts...damn thing wants to wrap around a leg, so my friends pull them away and I have to spot them in the waves. Unhook if I have to and leave the partner....

Getting there and negotiating the rig in a 21’ Triton with a single engine makes you feel like you can never take a deep breath, until you get back inside Chandelier.

The taking of big gar is pretty despicable and so is the blatant destruction of the marsh.

1000% agree with this. big gar are OLD. gar grow very fast their first few years, and then their growth rate drops off tremendously, and taking them at that rate is going to really kill off the breeding stock much faster than they should.

quote:

Growth rate is initially rapid and juveniles may measure 9 – 11 inch after the first year, but growth slows with age. In general, for every additional 10 inch the fish grows, its age doubles. A 35 inch gar is typically about 4 years old, a 47 inch gar about 8, and 80 inch gar might be 40 years old.

The people who cry about bowfishing suck at fishing. Me I can catch my 5 with a bow or reeling rod.

catch 10 reds, 50 trout, and a handful of drum and sheepshead = no problems
shoot 10 reds with a bow and arrow = people lose their mind

If you want to feel really uncoordinated, try bowfishing. Shooting from a moving boat at a moving fish and due to refraction of light in water you don’t aim at the fish..,you aim underneath them at varying amounts based on your view angle relative to the water surface, how deep the fish is, etc. it’s fun but maddeningly frustrating at the same time.

I can catch 5 reds with shrimp faster than I can shoot 5 reds any day.

Only time I have a problem is during duck season when they dont stop and roost up the few birds we do have.

I have always wondered if bow fisherman shoot undersized reds, accidentally or otherwise. If so what do you do?Throw 'em away? Is this a problem or concern?

I can't speak for everyone, but I've never been with someone who has shot an undersized red. First off, if it looks close you don't take the shot. Second, a small moving fish is a hell of a lot harder to hit than a legal fish
