State / Local taxes on chopping block in GOP tax plan.

Was with someone from California this last Friday. Ex-Army intelligence attache to General Patton (son, not dad). He is complaining about the GOP tax plan eliminating the state and local income, real estate and sales taxes from deductions.
He said on income of slightly over $300k, his property taxes are $5500+/- a year, his average sales taxes are $3000+/- a year, but his state income tax is over $27,000. So, he loses a big deduction under this proposal tax overhaul.
He was looking for sympathy from me, and I feel sorry for him, but told him that "When you live in a communist state, expect communism. Vote out the idiots that created your ridiculous tax system and stop spending money frivolously on taking care of every swinging dick that hops the border."
Obviosly not what he was looking for from me. But I brought up that Texas has great schools, great roads and bridges and a tax system where my wife and I can earn more but pay only a third of what he pays. And the state isn't broke.
Maybe, just maybe, the problem of high taxes with the high tax states like New York, California and New Jersey can be resolved by not giving the population the ability to write off state taxes. Maybe, the people will rise up and elect representatives that reduce budgets and reduce the tax burden on their citizens.

In essence, we (the US taxpayer) subsidize the high state income taxes of high tax states.
Those from those states are always the ones screaming loudest about fairness in taxes. They sing a different tune when it affects their wallets though.
And it's Trump's idea. They automatically hate it.

Is there anything of relevance that our government doesn't damn near give you a deduction on?
No wonder we're so deep in debt as a country. Tax breaks for every frigging thing, subsidies for every frigging thing. It has to stop if we want to continue as a nation on the path our forefathers set forth for us.

No more free lunches. Ditch the state income tax, mortgage interest, and EITC. Get rid of the OT baller deductions for boats and jets and shite too. There will be plenty of money to cut rates afterwards.

At 300k, he is the enemy and deserves to pay more.
Or so I'm told.

Another one is deduction of mandated work clothes by your employer when you have to purchase them yourself. If you want the damn job you'll buy the damn clothes that fit the job. Why should a person get a break from the government on that?

So would this punish blue states more?

You seriously asking this question? Name one “Blue State” that has reasonable State Income taxes?

Intuitively it seems that way, but I have not seen an in-depth analysis of the numbers.

It will sting a little, but it will be worth it to see people in NY, CA, Conn., etc. "pay their fair share."

Raising taxes on us little guys. Thanks, assholes.

Also medical deductions and a lot of other things. A lot of people would have a tax increase, and not just in NY and Ca.

We should eliminate all of these deductions and lower rates.
It’s stupid to have deductions for local taxes, mortgage interest and charities. End them all and lower the rates.

Won't get an argument from me, but those sanctimonious frickers will howl about such cuts and demand taxes be raised.
So, goose...gander.

You seem to be under the mistaken impression that our government is underfunded instead of guilty of wildly misappropriating the tax money's they do receive.

I've always thought this should be eliminated as a deduction, even though I live in Louisiana which has a state income tax.
I am a firm believer in anything that "exposes" taxes and their effects to people. For example, there is a total freak out everytime sales taxes get raised. It's because people know they will pay more - and there is NO avoiding it. If state income tax were not deductible - people would scream bloody murder every time it was raised.
Eliminating the deduction is the ONLY way people get interested in local governments, and how they spend our money. Plus it is the only way for me to stop funding (essentially by a tax credit issued to taxpayers in other states) insane public policies in states like California that has basically done nothing I agree with in the last 50 years. If those morons want to keep rolling along like they already are - fine - but I'm tired of paying for their dysfunction.
I'd be fine if we abolished the IRS entirely and income taxes entirely and just paid for all government services with sales taxes. Nobody is exempt from sales taxes. And government works better when people are paying attention to it.
One question I do not know the answer to . . .and maybe somebody does . . . Is it unconstitutional for there to be a requirement on any ballot initiative affecting property taxes - that the voter is a property owner. I've never understood how people could vote on an increase to property tax, when they don't own property. That seems like taxation without representation to me.
TLDR: in short, I would be totally fine with this change, especially if it were accompanied by a change in the due date of tax returns to the Tuesday before election day. Along with a law that said nobody gets to receive any tax credit resulting in a greater number than net zero in paid taxes. It's dysfunctional crap for anyone to ever get more in a tax "refund" than they paid in.
