I'm not sure how to articulate why, but this episode made me feel gross the entire time I was listening to it.It felt...condescending? Like an outsider's perspective on a very personal topic for a huge portion of the population, handled insensitively.
Felt as if no one involved had ever spoken to an unmarried mother before, and definitely not an unmarried mother w/o a college degree

The underlined parts are the entire problem. No one wants to take a hard, rational look at the problem. As long as emotions dominate the discussion, nothing will change.

I disagree. The problem with single moms is most don't work 8-5 jobs that enable them to be off of work when their kids are home or to work when the state provides child care. That's the key to success, is being there with your kids when they are not in school.

Like I said, you can be a single parent and have success but it requires a stable support system. I've know women to do so. I've known men to do so. But there has to be motivation there to be more than just your run of the mill single parent.

It's much deeper than time with your kids. I can point to your stereotypical welfare queen that has tons of time to "be at home with the kids" while working part-time at most and drawing benefits. It's a systematic issue where not valuing education and self-worth is reinforced on a daily basis.

Some of these girls are taught from an early age that the best they'll ever be able to do is pop out some kids and draw a check. My office aide two years ago was a black, teen, single mother who grew up in the hood here. And she'll be the first to tell you that had she listened to everyone except her Mom (who had just come out of rehab) and Grandmother that she would've dropped out and drew a check. Probably would've started dealing too. But she had a couple of people who pushed her to do better than what everyone around her was settling for. She'll graduate with her Bachelors next year and her kid is doing really well.

Our biggest issue with single-parents today is how hard it is for them to break the cycle.

At the very least we should be handing out birth control like candy.

The US abortion rate has dropped considerably since Roe v Wade and it's happened while birth control has become more affordable and widely available. We should be encouraging access to birth control instead of restricting it. It'll save our government a hell of a lot of money in the long run if we did.

that's because these idiots believe in subjective experience over scientific data

well labeling something -ist has become a successful way to dismiss an entire argument/discussion.

This is also being called sexist because he asked if she felt she was biased because she is married with children. As in maybe, she was trying to confirm her life choice.

72%.

Freaking 72%.

Let that sink in.

That was 9 years ago. Today in Shreveport, Louisiana, the percentage of black children born to single moms is 86%. This statistic comes from the pediatricians at the charity hospital taking care of these kids, so I'm confident it's accurate.

Agreed. Birth control is one of the best investments we can make as a country.

Well, to be honest one political party benefits bigly from people being stuck in poverty and dependent on government money

which party?

the current administration plans to eliminate BC for millions of women

despite the fact that in states like in CO where BC was given free to teenagers, it resulted in lowered abortions and food stamp participants

, no.

Iceland is a homogenous society - 93% of the population is Icelandic (Norse and Celtic descent). 84% of the population belongs to the Lutheran Church.

And yet, 66% of children are born to unwed mothers, blowing away the US rate of 40% in 2007.

It ends up saving taxpayers a lot more than what you spend.

While this may burst your bubble, both the rate/1000 unmarried women and the percentage of births to unwed mothers has gone down among that demographic since 2007.
