Why is that a push? Florida's economy is a frick ton better than the Gulf states.

It's just a joke, everyone seems to pile on Florida.

why not Haiti, and Bangladesh while we are at it? wtf would anyone want PR? Just more welfare payments and criminality.

This will be imteresting.. The issue could well be political kryptonite for both parties.

Lol at drawing comparisons between Haiti and PR.

Well, I can think of reasons why you would like it.
Plenty of undeveloped areas where you can go all survivor man on.

Potentially our 58th state. They will send two senators to DC, and based on current population, 5 representatives. (7 total EVs).

Eh. I agree, but if the parties involved realize this, they can simply ignore and nothing happens. PR doesn't have a moral leg to stand on to sway American public opinion.
Unlike Texas, who was also in debt which was absolved by statehood, PR doesn't really see themselves as part of the US. Even the most casual observer can read the sudden press for urgency for what it is: a way out of debt.
And their transplants acting as a voting bloc in the States? It's antedoctal, but multiple different "groups" I've known and worked with don't want PR to join the US. They feel the union is too one sided.
Where it'll get messy is if a faction of either party latches on it and forces it to stay in the limelight.
ETA:
It's worth meationing that they know this. Back in 2015 their representative introduced a bill to govern the process of PR's admission. It was to remove the Americans from having a say, neither Congress or the President. It was to make a vote within PR to be binding to the US.
Let the audacity of that marinate for a second.
Needless to say it went nowhere. But I don't think the boycott by the opposition came internally. I think it was passed down to them to prevent a true popular mandate from being present and thus ignorable politically by both parties.

They are already US Citizens. Some of you clearly don't realize this based on the comments.

They dont get a star on the flag

This would be good for the U.S. Right now, they suck the welfare tit, but do not pay federal taxes. Now, they will suck the welfare tit AND pay taxes.
This is an improvement over the status quo.

Debt ridden hellhole that eats itself alive through keynesian bullshite economics and wants more free shite from the feds. Plus guaranteed democrat delegation with two senators and one representative.

Yes, but they are more close politically to an independent nation than a state.
Independent Nation
US Commonwealth
US territory
US state
That's why they can vote for independence and get it. When Louisiana last voted for independence all we got was invaded!

If PR is a hell hole you are not worldly. Lol

They already receive govt assistance. They also get massive breaks on taxes. It would actually be cheaper to have them as a state
Think that through another layer or two. Think about their impact in the House and Senate...then tell me what they'll cost...

That's not a tax shelter, though. Lol

Oh I don't doubt at all that it's a great vacation spot and they got some sexy mamacitas over there but that's just tourist stuff.
They're not fit for statehood in the United States of America as they do not have their fiscal house in order and they are debt ridden and ate up on Keynesian economics that put them exactly into the position they are today.
