Guess he should've been smarter with his college decision.

ETA: he should've been smarter period.

If I'm an MLB team I'm not drafting this guy. Almost killing a guy in a drunk driving thing doesn't hold nearly the stigma of child molestation.

I hear ya. The only aspect that maybe makes me consider giving him a chance is that he was 15 when this happened.

You're wrong. They've posted studies showing you're wrong and you want them to go find studies that don't exist. It's okay

Not defending the guy at all. I'm not. I believe that child molesters are monsters and can not be rehabilitated, especially not abusing a damn 6 year old. That is absolutely sickening.

All that being said, can you imagine being this kid and making it this far only for this to happen so damn close to the draft. It's 4 days away and this story breaks. Also, to think that the only reason it unraveled is because he didn't know he had to update within 10 days of his birthday. I bet he wanted to puke when the newspapers started texting him for his response. (Read the story below about why they published the article.) He refused to respond so they published. I don't feel sorry for the guy, but to get this close to the draft for it to blow up in your face and to know that it was coming for the last couple of weeks. He has to be sick. No freaking way I'd draft him if I'm a GM of an MLB team. The PR hit would be massive. The locker room would be a shite show. Fans would heckle him in ways I can't even imagine. His future as a professional ball player are done.

To go from a top 10 pick to undrafted on your day off is impressive

The studies have absolutely no discernible hypothesis

A 10 year old grabbing and molesting an 8 year old on the playground

A 17 year old that grabs a 16 year olds arse

A 15 year old that puts his hands inside a 6 year old family member

In those "studies", all such data is grouped together. It is complete shite

For example, in those studies, it could be a 100% recidivism rate for puberty aged tteenagers who molest pre pubescent family members

And yet, if could be completely lost in the data

I also don't see how they could gauge a repeat offender accurately. It's one thing to go "oh he never did it again"

But unless they serverely monitor all the people in the study (in which case would undermine the study as being artificial) then they could've been a repeat offender just not been caught the next time. Maybe I'm not informed enough on how that study was conducted but those are my initial concerns with just buying into a study like that blindly

It really is a horrific misleading study

To not break down recidivism by nature of crime makes it completely misleading, considering the nature of each crime isn't committed in equal quantities

I'm no expert, but I would bet money if you're a teenager who is touching a relative who is in pre-kindergarten, you were probably sexually abused yourself.

I think I'd have trouble calling his next game as a broadcaster. I'd be up in my head trying my best not to say any words that could possibly be dirty. "Amazingly, Heimlich has thrown 24 pitches today, 22 strikes, and 2...not strikes."

I've had some bad days, but I think he just took the cake.

True but this case isn't an example of it- this isn't some HS Senior getting railroaded because their boyfriend or girlfriend's parents hate them or a frat boy getting trashed and pissing in an alley. This is actually an example of something that should result in a sex offender registration.

I just spoke about this topic with a liberal coworker and they were of the opinion that "the only reason people are defending his behavior is because he is an athlete."

I mean they're not wrong, unless it comes out that he was molested himself and thus needed help he never received there's not too much ambiguity here-- this isn't one of those HS romance statuatory cases or an "exposure conviction via public urination" mistake -- the guy was convicted of some sick shite.

On the flip side, him being an athlete is the only reason this story was written.

That was admitted in the "why we published this" piece. I mean, they wouldn't be researching the guys background if not for his performance this year and them wanting to profile him. But once they found the info, they felt they had a responsibility to run it once verified.

I mean shite, he even admitted to it.

Not sure how this can be defended on any level.

Honestly, with the draft less than a week out, it's kind of shocking this hasn't come out. The Oregonian posted something on their site about why they posted the story and the only reason they found out about this was because they were planning a big bio piece on Heimlich ahead of the draft and they run routine background checks on all of their interview subjects and that's how this arose.

I'm surprised this didn't leak earlier from MLB brass that did background checks on him.

Any team that it scares away wouldn't care and any team not scared away wouldn't want it out.
