Does he have any responsibilities that could prove to be detrimental to yourself, the public or the company? If so, talk to him. If that doesn't work, go to his supervisor or HR. If you're not his friend, leave him the hell alone. Life is hard.

This doesn't make sense. Who has the self control to bring beer to work keep it cold and in the car, but not the discipline to keep from being a drunk. A drunk doesn't mess around with beer. It's a flask hidden somewhere around the workplace.

Well on the bright side, the op now has a lunch drinking buddy. Has someone asked if he works on any type of heavy machinery yet.

Be an adult and assume others will be as well.

Let him handle his own business and any consequences that result from it.

You wouldn't be saving lives by reporting him.

I had an accounting teacher in college. The class started at 1:00PM MWF. One day he came into class and said "look, sometimes I go have lunch with people and I even have a drink or two. If that bothers anyone then you can always drop the class".

Evidently someone reported the department and told them he would come in late (he would run a few minutes late at times, maybe 5 mins late) and that some days he would make questionable comments (he was funny, I don't know what "questionable comments" he made).. Anyway, about half way into the semester he quit because he got a job work for Shaw (this was 2001-2002ish).

If you see something, say something. He could be working under cover for HR and "testing" your integrity and attitude towards your employer.

Another angle....is this guys job on the same level as yours...you know if a promotion comes up, is it between you 2 dipshit who gets it?

This is actually a good point. Can it be used in his advantage? If so then pounce on it.. Other than that....

Mind your own business, or either go sit and have a drink with them. Man that's an easy solution!

had a prof at LSU that told us on day one(class started at 9am,)that he usually stopped at the student union bar(I think it opened at 8am back then,) before class, and anyone that met him there and bought him a beer would receive favorable consideration when it came grading time, I got an A in the class

NUNYA

As others have said, if said fella is putting others potentially in harms way, then discuss it with him......be prepared to snitch though and he'll know who did.

That said, there is the possibility he isn't an alchy and maybe you've assumed too much.

Also, make sure you're not being a hypocrite.
