What was your reaction?

When I was a kid I thought they were from the south and listened a lot. In college I found out they were inauthentic and lost interest in them.

Informed a friend of mine over the weekend and she refused to believe it

Similar reaction.
Was shocked to find they were from Cali.

But, that actually made me appreciate them even more, as they learned and adapted to sounds that fit them.
Wouldn't call them "inauthentic" at all.

It's like at LSU.
Took a LA history class.
First day of class, professor tells us he's from New Jersey.
Class lets off collective sigh of "wtf".
Dude states that other people can know your history as well. One of my more fond classes at LSU.

I remember when I first came home from the ME in 1991 I was briefly stationed at Ft. Polk, LA. There was some radio station that I wear played nothing but CCR it seemed. Every time I'd turn them on they'd be playing something by them. I figured it was because they were from Louisiana. Later on when I found out they went from LA, I was left quite confused about that radio station.

thought this was always known? the funny thing was when they had the "best southern band" thread here and CCR won...

I'd say the inauthenticity had more to do with the fact that they were really a one-man band. Funny to think of them doing that kind of music in NorCal at the same time as Jefferson Airplane and the Dead is funny to me for some reason.

I always thought JF had a somewhat Cajun accent (imo). But then when I found out they were from Cali the song Lodi made a lot more sense.

John Fogerty had never even been to Louisiana much before the 1980's .

He had a special on Showtime in the 1980's about the time Centerfield came out.

First half the show was him at the NY Yankee's training camp in Florida with George Thorogood who is a big baseball fan.

The second half of the show was John Fogerty himself in the Atchafalaya Spillway..
A place he said he felt always wanted to be, but had never really been there. He grew up listening to Louisiana Blues

Rockin Sydney (My toot toot) was his guest for this half.
I was a great show.

That show is where this video came from.

A couple others that suprised me were Lowell George from Hollywood and Tom Petty from FL.

Lowell sounded like he crawled out a swamp and The Heartbreakers sounded West Coast.

I was a kid in the late 60's/early 70's when they ruled radio. CCR and The Band were the "Southern bands" that we listened to. Out of those nine guys, only Levon Helm was from the South.

We couldn't wait for the first cool day so that we could wear our CCR flannel shirts to school. That style lasted way past their initial influence.
