Turning radius and just ease of turning really. After I drove the propel the demo guy asked if it turned better than the Manta Ray, when I told him yes he showed me how they had modified the rudder on the propel. I guess that could be done on the Manta Ray as well to help out. For me though the Manta Ray is the Outback with a worse seat, worse handling, and worse drive system. The propel has advantages over the Outback just came down to preferring the mirage drive for me.

No mention of the feelfree lure with the overdrive system. Anyone have thoughts on that one. Not sure if it's even available yet. I'd like to demo
Outback
Slayer
Feelfree(if available)
Cooda FD

Is there anywhere that has all of those? If I'm going through a lot of marsh and grass is it stupid not to go with the outback? I just don't care for the layout as much as the others.

I demoed at pack and paddle and they didn't have the feel free or the coosa. I don't think the Coosa is even out yet.
From my understanding the Native drive is not good in grass or shallow water.

Is it the same seat as the other Natives?

I'm kind of morbidly curious about the Titan. That is a big ole boat with a lot of versatility.

I'm with you on this, really looking forward to demoing it when it hits the dealerships. The biggest turnoff to me will probably be the weight of it. I'm interested to compare the speed of it to my Slayer Propel 13 as well.

I fish mostly shallow marsh and the Hobie and Jackson are the only one's I would consider.

Yeah I'm curious about this as well. I'm hoping to get a FeelFree Lure this year. So many things I like about their setup but the versatility to add or configure things is at the top of the list.

I had a hobie pro angler 14. Ended up selling it because it was so heavy and a pain to get in and out of my truck.

I now have a slayer propel 13. Bought it on Hook1 a couple weeks ago for $2k, no tax and free shipping.

It works well. I like how I can reverse and it's much much lighter than the PA14. It's easy to pole around the marshes.

I love a good "I sold my Hobie for a Native" story. Welcome to the hands-free reverse club!!

Also, in case this helps anyone on this thread. I've posted my review & pros/cons of Hobie Outback 180 Drive vs Native Slayer Propel 13 on page 2 of the linked thread...

Jackson Coosa FD - $3000

what the hell??????

my 17ft flatboat fully rigged with trolling motor and batteries (not counting trailer and outboard) cost $2800 and its a full fishing platform

those damn things cost a fortune, before spending that much I say just get yourself a $300 fiberglass pirogue and call it a day

It's pretty retarded to spend that kind of money on a yak. I bout a $500 yak to throw in the back of my truck and fish out of. If I was gonna spend 3k on something like that I would have just bought a small boat.

The early reviews on the Perception pedal drive are terrible. Tons of complaints and problems. From reading the reviews, it feels like they rushed it to be the cheapest pedal on the market.

I did a lot of research on the Perception Pilot and talked to a vendor here in Houston. He said that most of the ones that he has sold he has received back because the drives broke. I believe academy pulled them out of their stores because they had so many warrnanty issues. Would not recommend the pilot until they fix the drive.

Eh, different strokes for different folks. Sure you could buy a boat for that much, but it doesn't have the same applications. You are hard pressed to put a self-contained fishing vessel other than a kayak in the bed of your truck by yourself. And it's a different fishing experience entirely from a boat.

To me, this is like saying it's ridiculous to spend $2500 on a fully rigged out compound bow because for that much you could buy a top end rifle. Sure, they accomplish the same end goal of killing a deer, but they're for different applications and different experiences.

I wish I would have seen that thread earlier. Nice pros/cons, and you also hit it on the head earlier with the guy at Pack & Paddle being on the Hobie fishing team. That is exactly the case and why he pushed the Hobie.

Also wanted to add about the Propel drive. I actually was in Henderson once and went straight over a stump just below the surface. I was heading in and moving pretty fast, so the stump popped up the kayak and my propel drive landed inside the stump actually snapping off one of the blades on my propel drive. Even with just 1 blade I was easily able to peddle back to the launch.
Also I run over oyster beds every time I head into the marsh and have no problems with it. That thing is tough

I absolutely love the Native Ultimate, but dropping a pedal drive in it just seems dumb.

I saw a guy demo an Ultimate FX Propel and flip it. He admitted that it was his fault but the scary thing was the kayak itself had to be rescued. It was headed for the bottom with that heavy pedal drive. The company that hosted the demo stopped selling them after that incident.

For redfish, I think a Hobie would get my most serious consideration. You can get shallow without having to mess with the drive system. You just need to do very short strokes. Maybe some of the newer kayaks do that too. My Slayer is okay in shallow water but it's 100% paddling/poling at that point. Either the drive is in the water or it isn't.
