Of course I know the Hobie but want to exhaust my research. What's available these days?

I will recommend an outback. I like being able to pedal in shallow water.

So many options. No way I would consider Hobie though. Look at the Slayers, Radar, Manta Ray and Pilot. I'll be getting one from that group soon. Manta Ray in early lead.

I have an outback. If I fished deeper water consistently. Or water without grass I'd get a slayer propel

I'll ask here instead of starting a new thread.

But I'm looking to get a kayak and don't know where to start.

Not looking to spend much and it won't be used to fish out of either. Mostly used in places like bayou St John or some creeks or lakes in MS.

Some times I would have maybe a bag, sleeping bag, small tent for a night or two primitive camping trip.

Any suggestions? Should I look around Craigslist?

Thanks

Search for YouTube videos about 2016 iCAST pedal kayaks.

Hobie pioneered the field but the Slayer Propel has been around for a few years now so it's a solid choice too (I own a Slayer Propel 13). There will be 4 or 5 other models available soon. You'll have lots of choices. The biggest knock against Hobie is the lack of an easy reverse but it has a lot of advantages over other kayaks.

The best thing to do is to describe the type of fishing you'll be doing and how you plan to transport the kayak. The board can give better feedback then.

Marsh fishing for reds almost exclusively. Back of my truck. Can get one of those hitch supports. But would not want to do a trailer.

I'm getting the type of itch I need to scratch. This sounds like exercise with the plus of fishing/eating.
Recs on skinny water paddlers and roll type transporters over levee's, etc.

I've always loved the Jacksons. When does the flex drive come out?

Rep I spoke to yesterday said the first shipment will leave the warehouse on May 8th, but that the first shipments will be to fulfill preorders. So I'd expect late may, June for any stores to start getting them. Demos may hit the stores in may

Demo demo demo!!! No better way to make a choice than to try them out before you buy them. I personally fish out of a Native Slayer Propel 13. I believe The Backpacker has a demo day coming up pretty soon in Baton Rouge. You could also take a ride over to Everything Kayak in Gulfport as they have a pool inside the store to demo in.

I just demoed the Outback, Manta Ray and Slayer last week. I went with the Outback. The drive felt much more comfortable for me. The Native system your actually pedaling, like a bike, instead of pushing with the mirage drive. That just felt awkward for me. The seat on the Outback was also more comfortable for me. The Slayer propel has the nicest layout and was a close second. The slayer layout with the mirage drive would be the perfect kayak for me. I liked nothing about the Manta Ray. The Manta Ray didn't handle well at all.

ETA : I drove the Manta Ray first then the Outback, I almost didn't even bother trying out the Slayer propel the difference in the Outback and Manta Ray was so big. I went ahead and tried the Slayer and it was much much better than the Manta Ray. Handled and just felt totally different. If not for my preference of the mirage drive I would have went with the Slayer.

Hobie Outback - $2500
Hobie PA - $3500
Old Town Predator PDL - $2800
Pescador Pilot - $1800
Wilderness Systems Radar - $2600
Native Slayer Propel - $2400
Jackson Coosa FD - $3000

I know that's not a fully comprehensive list and several of those have different lengths of the same kayak, but that's a good jumping off point. For some reason, Old Town doesn't have a strong following in the south, but I have one of their boats and have been extremely impressed with their stuff.

Adding/clarifying a couple more to this list:

Native Slayer Propel 13 - $2600
Native Slayer Propel 10 - $2400
Native Manta Ray Propel 12 - $2100
Native Ultimate FX Propel 13 - $2,950
Native Titan Propel 13.5 - $3,250

I absolutely love the Native Ultimate, but dropping a pedal drive in it just seems dumb. It doesn't have scupper holes and some of the great things about the ultimate are its lightweight portability, excellent paddling and general all-purposeness.

Idk, this just seems like the wrong application for a pedal drive, but to each his own.

I'm kind of morbidly curious about the Titan. That is a big ole boat with a lot of versatility. Figure out a way to strap a 2.5hp outboard on their, and you're basically looking at a solo skiff.

sounds like you want to hit up some camping I would suggest a used nucanoe. easy to paddle and room for a ton of gear.

We just did a bogue chitto 2 day trip last fall. lots of fun.
