Get one of the valentine radars and have it professionally installed with the laser "jamming" leds that mount on your tag and grill

Why do you need to drive above the speed limit?

Get a Passport 8500 Black from Amazon. It's built on the same platform as the 9500, but doesn't have all the GPS. You have Waze for that.

I bought one for under $200 a couple weeks ago.

You can get the Passport Redline, the absolute top of the line, but it'll cost you a bunch more for not that much more range.

You can go for the new Passport with the directional arrows, but I've always found those to be a gimmick. If you know how to read your detector, they're unnecessary.
Been running nothing but Passports for years on my Hayabusa and various sports cars. The 8500 Black saved me big time hauling arse down a back road in East Feliciana parish yesterday. Three sheriff's cars on a road they normally don't travel.

Nothing is ever 100%, but they give you a better chance.

Avoid the Valentine 1. They've been behind the times for almost 20 years. Most overrated tech gadget I can think of. Doesn't even have a 3.5 mm audio jack for a external speaker unless you buy the expensive adapter. They sold a bunch of V1s because of the directional arrows. The side arrows are completely useless (radar doesn't work like that), and after spending only a little time with a regular detector, you can discern where the signal is coming from by how the signal strength increses (or doesn't, if the cop's behind you)

I use a screamer speaker on my Passports so I can hear them above my stereo or over the wind noise and exhaust on my bike. You can get them from eBay or somewhere like motorcycleradar.com.

This pushes my buttons. The answer:To keep from getting run over. I'm not talking about driving 80,I'm talking 76 which I've been able to do comfortably for years. Louisiana is the worst state I've seen at writing BS speeding tickets, especially when we're also a state where crime is rampant. If a motorist is driving recklessly or appears to be impaired, get him. If he is simply driving a few miles over the speed limit let it go.

both for what used to be a safe 6 miles over the highway limit

Damn. I always thought 9 over was the accepted number.

I set my cruise at speed limit plus 9 everywhere I go and don't even scan for cops. I'd be pissed if I got one for 6 over.

If you had a detector you would have known he was there from a mile away. That cop is always there and uses Ka and K band. He keeps his Ka gun always on and then uses his K gun to instant on you.

No one needs to drive above the speed limit.

The better question you should be asking is why is the speed limit so low?

Take NYS for example. The statewide speed limit is 55. It hasn't been updated in decades, with the exception of upping the speed limit on the Thruway to 65 under popular pressure.

Now, the Thruway was designed to safely handle 80 miles an hour, but has been held artificially low due to state police lobbying. That might seem curious until you drive on it and realize no one goes the speed limit. If you're going 65 you get run off the road, the average speed is 80 mph, as designed. If you want to know more on how this works google 80th percentile and traffic engineering.

So what happens then is the troopers can pull over anyone they want to because technically everyone is breaking the law. It's not about safety here but revenue and the ability to pull over anyone.

I drive like 50,000 miles a year but have to deal with the same driving record standards as people comutting around town. It's unjust, but I deal.

You have got to be one of the biggest idiots on the road, definitely #1 in this thread

I have rolled with a V1, a Redline, and an 8500. V1 wins by a mile

Have driven I-10 constantly between TX, LA, and FL, for years, I set the cruise on 70, no detector, no tickets, no problems.

Six over sucks.
Generally the rule of thumb is 10%.
So six over in a $60 will get you.
My advice. Get a lawyer for every ticket. You wind up paying less and they get it as a non moving violation.

Also get a really good radar detector. Even if it's a half week's pay, it's worth it.

You know you can just call whoever handles tickets and do the same thing? I've done it plenty of times

They just tell you to send a money order in with a copy of your ticket

I set my cruise control and I've never been run over. Why is 6 mph over the speed limit a magic number that saves you from being run over?

I regularly drive 10 over on the interstate and 5 over on the highway. I haven't been ticketed once in the last year.

I really got fd last week because of a speeding ticket from 2 years ago

69 in a 55 on 190 near Livonia. DK it went from 65 to 55. Even had it set on cruise.

Anyhow was making a switch to Geico. From 254 to 185 a month. When they found at paper signing time about the ticket, it went to 270 a month. Takes 5 years to come off my record. So one ticket cost me thousands of dollars. Still pissed.
