Except Barbe...who voted for the split...which actually allowed Haughton to even make the playoffs...who eliminated Barbe...the irony!

Can parents choose which public school their kid attends?

In many cases yes.

Yes, I taught at a middle school in Caddo Parish and parents could select what high school their kids wanted to attend.

Different high schools had different specialties and parents could select that. Such as one high school was the designated "Music" school (I forget which one). Thus if parents thought their child was musically inclined they could send their kid to that school.

Ayone that lives in Sabine Parish can opt to send their child to Many High School. Since Many is the only school in the parish that offers football any student from that parish is, by rule, allowed to attend Many to play football.

Also if anyone lives in a "failing" school district they can opt to send their kid to a non-failing school.

There are also "Magnet" schools such as Madison Prep and C.E. Byrd that don't have attendance zones but are somehow classified "non-select".

There are plenty of kids who attend public schools outside of the zone they live in.

As I've said before, this whole split had nothing to do with fairness or "recruiting". This was simply Norman Booker and his sheep trying to find the easiest way possible to win a state title.

This is what split proponents don't want everyone to know. The example you posted is one of many similar situations throughout the state. I'd even go so far as to say that there are more public school districts like this than there are those who have all kids in their zoned schools. This whole thing is predicated on a false premise - that all public schools get only in-zone kids.

Cue the split proponents throwing out examples of this and that school district that do abide by zones....I know there are those...however, you are being had if you believe everyone is like that.

But it's ok you got rid of those evil privates like St. Frederick and St. Michael who get all the stud athletes in Monroe and Baton Rouge...

Problem with the split supporters like Norman Booker is that they want everyone to believe that every private school is like Curtis or Evangel with stud athletes walking the halls.

In reality most private school are like Ascension Catholic, Ecole or St. Marys that will occasionaly have good athletes but mostly rely on legacy students and fund raising to keep the school running.

Exactly. If you examined the rosters of the vast majority of Catholic schools, you'd see just about every kid had attended Catholic schools his/her whole life. In some cases, these schools lose many more of their feeder school kids to public high schools than vice versa.

Exactly. I taught at a small private school at we lost way more kids to the large public schools compared to the ones we brought in. And I can honestly say that those same public schools definitely try and recruit athletes from the smaller private schools.

It is euphoric. It can take a program to new limits. Maybe some kids that were watching and debating playing baseball or their parents debate sending them there to play sports will change their minds or can be rest assured they can do big things. That is how programs are built. Big wins where you aren't suppose to win.

someone can correct me if iam wrong, but Central has always had a good program. Dating back 20 years to when i was in school. This isnt some 2nd rate program

Back when I was in school and the final 8 went to state it seemed like it was always Brother Martin, Central, WM, Catholic, Barbe, Airline, Rummel, and then one wild card.

Sometimes it isn't even "recruiting" though. The idea of free school is a pretty good enticement over however many thousands of dollars of tuition.

I really don't know what the solution is, but what we have now is not it. It won't change though, especially now with the 2/3 rule.

No doubt and I think you misunderstood my post. I was saying that the idea of free school at Neville or Barbe is an enticement over paying tuition at St Fred's or St Louis.
