The gun store is pushing the glock 43? (.380)

I think the 43 is the 9mm version. Try renting one at a shooting range and see if its too snappy for you. If not, the 9mm is going to be a better option than the 380, and the bullets are cheaper and easier to come by.

yep Glock 42 is .380

I shot my brothers 43 a few times. definitely has a little snap to it being so light.

She needs to be able to rack the slide to even consider a semi-auto

Some good info in the below threads. IMO the advice doesn't really change from female to male as each are more than capable of working the different platforms and should be proficient as no gun is the equivalent of training wheels when it comes to gun fighting.

Try the Walther CCP. It's the VP9's little cousin. Great shooter.

We went through this and my wife after shooting a few decided on a Walther PK380 - easy to handle and shoot, one of the main reasons was there is almost no effort needed to rack a shell

Gun stores love to recommend "little guns for little ladies" -- but thankfully not quite that little.

Here's a different opinion:

Just picked up a Sig P238 as a backup piece and I love shooting it. Great size, solid and reliable. You can find them all "girlied up" if you look around.

I like Glock and in my opinion the Glocks in 9 mm and .40 cal are good choices.

I would stay away from .380.

My opinion is for self defense and concealed carry...Semi-Auto is much better than revolvers.

And nevermind the slide being to hard to operate. There are numerous videos on Youtube that show you easy ways to pull the slide back that doesn't take a lot of strength.

100% agree, revolver over semi-auto for my little lady. Just point and pull the trigger, no fidgeting with a safety, racking the slide, etc. Just point and pull the trigger. In a moment of panic, that's all she has to do. Point and pull the trigger.

Same thing with a shield, glock 43, or for that matter most semiauto striker fired pistols. Point and pull the trigger?

Where they land no one knows. I'm sure she'll remember that in a moment of panic.

Lol. Point and pull the trigger is the same way you shoot a semi.

And hard is it to insert magazine and pull back the slide to load it? It ain't rocket science. Surely she can learn to do that with a little practice

be careful getting her a gun that is too small. the smaller the gun the higher the recoil will be.

i would say:

1) involve her in the purchase.

2) advise her to get the largest gun she can reasonably carry...this pretty much goes for anyone though. also keep in mind "reasonable" will depend on many factors such as attire and method of carry.

3) get her shooting that thing!

4) both of you take a defensive handgun course if you have not already. remember "it's the indian, not the arrow, that matters"...in fact you may consider doing this first as it will allow you to make a more informed decision on the purchase
